The Bus Story

He jerked his head upright, and the inside of a bus swam into focus.

...uggh...where am I...

He turned left, a window, the scenery, a blur to his sleep ridden mind.  He looked right.

Of all the gin joints in the world

It was her again, but who was that guy?  It'd been a while since they'd lived down the hall from one another.  He'd changed, but had she?

He looked ahead again trying to focus on what was going on in terms of where the bus was going.   He looked out the window.

He refused to look at her.

I just have to see her again

He took another glance, and the feelings swelled again.  He tried to crush them, but to no avail.

She's just so beautiful... but... I couldn't

He returned his gaze to the window, popping his headphones into his ears.  He'd drown her out with music.

Suddenly, he felt the seat depress next to him.

Suddenly, the bus was gone, and the seat had grown, and she was lying next to him, her head just short of his lap.

And on a bus seat in the middle of the emptiness he wished she'd slide closer.

She picked her head up, and slid herself forward, placing her head on his leg, Her feathered hair just reaching the side of his arm.  She was facing away still.  Reaching up, he touched a fingertip to the tattoo on her arm, and traced the design.

She shifted, rolling over, but her beautiful face had gone, and the girl he'd wished to forget by running away appeared.  Her face phased, flickering and shaking, melding it's way from where the beautiful girl's had been.  He leaped up, the bus reappearing, as slammed into the window with his shoulder.

NO, NO!

Now he was screaming. The face slowly stopped shaking.  Settling slowly into the one he didn't want to see.

NO! I LEFT YOU BEHIND! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!  WHY CAN'T YOU JUST LET ME BE!

He rushed forward pushing past it's grasping arms, the tattoo gone, like the beauty.  Running down the aisle, he watched as the heads of others on the bus turned facelessly, and through the white of each, she was emerging.  He reached the front of the bus, reach over one of the monstrosities forms, grabbed the cord and pulled.  The bus jerked to a stop, he bolted to the stairs, slammed against the door, and fell out under the stars.
