once upon a time there was a girl
not close to ordinary by any binary means
she would loggerhead whomever she could
her mother, grandfather, no-one stood in her way
then she learned to walk.
independent, and strong, could easily be anything
but held back
fighting on all fronts; illness, intelligence, wantonness,
through closed doors, locked gates, over walls, sports sheds,
wanting more, yet always held back.
her light was then darkened in the autumn of '93
when trust was destroyed, innocence lost, naivity stolen
in the dark, in secret,
in silence
in fear.
winter has followed her; stalked her
hounded unabated.
trust is not easily built, and like lego,
it is fragile
too many times, have her shields been let down
only to be betrayed,
taken for granted,
raized to the ground.
each time she's rebuilt,
but not any longer.
there's only so much a wall can take
before it's wearied away.
apathy has replaced the fear
apathy has replaced everything.
she just does what she needs to do, and doesn't bother to feel.
