a newer mind: regressing 20 years and feeling old

cooking a risotto to the rather intriguing Newermind which is a 20th anniversary tribute to Nirvana's Nevermind album (the one with the very famous picture of the baby in water).

there's a very interesting selection of artists bringing their own "spin" to the tracks, which is refreshing to hear, but then there are others who are just essentially trying to revisit the original, and failing.

the weakest point in the whole album is midnight juggernauts version of "come as you are". this song is well known for it's strong angsty refrain, but they kill it with their, admittedly very original, take.

strongest points are Charles Bradley and his brilliant motown take of "Stay Away" and Amanda Palmer and her hauntingly beautiful version of "Polly".

the thing with tribute albums is the general consensus of expectation with the artists being given tribute and those creating it. overall, this album manages to recreate the original angst of Cobain's songs in new and surprising ways, but it's also disjunctive and far less harmonic than the original.

tribute, 20th anniversary, old, nirvana, nevermind, music, random spittle, review
