happy birthday to
feighlioch!
i've decided that this whole new car and learning to drive thing was an absolutely fabulous idea. possibly one of the best i've had this year. according to my instructor, Pots, i'm progressing really well. i started off in a dead end street and rapidly moved into 'quiet suburban' driving, and made the huge leap into 'opposite peak flow on a busy roadway in the rain', then to 'night time on the highway' driving. it's all been fabulous and scary and new and fun! at this rate, i'll be able to take the test and get my license by christmas!
the thing i hate the most at the moment is the hunting around for insurance. the annual subscriptions are horrendous! i'm looking at an average of $1300 for insurance, RACQ and rego each year just so the car can be considered 'safe' to take out on the road. and people have often wondered why it has taken me so long to even bother with the whole driving thing. i have saved myself up to $1300 per year with the walkiung and cycling i've done to get to where ever i've needed to go, only occasionally relying on public transport and lifts. i knew the cost of a car was going to be a burdon on my finances, and that was one of the main reasons i didn't bother. that, and i simply didn't care to learn in a hurry. i live in the inner city, i don't really need a car, but it comes in handy for certain things. and considering i've got the Sprog, it's become more of a necessity. it's easier to travel from Point A to Point B with a child if you have a car; this is a considerably noticeable change that has occurred. it makes it easier for the Sprog to be able to visit his grandparents on a regular basis. public transport out to the sticks is just not all that viable with a stroller in tow.
i'm starting to look forward to the day when i can go out in the car by myself, without the need for a licensed person to be present. i'm hoping to be able to do this sooner rather than later, and with my confidence increasing every time i get behind the wheel, i'm almost positive that it'll happen. in a month or two, i'll be paying for professional lessons, just to tweak out any bad habits i may have developed, and to prepare me for the actual test iteself. i figure, that if i've got a handful of those under my belt, i'll be better prepared for the randomness of the tester. plus, i'm sure the instructor will be able to throw horrible things at me, like hill starts and reverse parking (which i'm already fairly good at!) and three point turns and all that crap.
i'm just itching to get driving.
til next....
