I was listening to Cartel's cover of Wonderwall (which I happen to love more than the original, sorry Oasis), and then, naturally I went to Wikipedia to see if there was an entry about the song. There is! And I discovered that instead of being about Noel Gallagher's girlfriend at the time, supposedly "It's a song about an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself."
Think how amazing-tastic it could be! Like, a musical, even. Panic follows Main Character Guy around with their guitars providing the the soundtrack to Main Character Guy's life!
All the Panic boys used to be someone else's imaginary friend, but whoever they were assigned to grew out of the imaginary friend phase and now they don't have anything else to do! They don't want to be reassigned to some other kids who will just dump them when they grow out of the imaginary phase so they started a band!
Main Character Guy never really stopped believing in his imaginary friend, or maybe his Imaginary Friend bent the rules a little so Main Character Guy can still see him, and of course he can see Panic too! (Main Character Guy's pretty sure he's a little crazy because he can see imaginary people.)
The first time he saw Panic he thought they were real! He had no idea why his Imaginary Friend was totally dying with laughter when he started asking them all these questions about their music/clothing choices because really, Ryan? Really?
Panic loves that Main Character Guy talks to them - when he's sure other people are around who won't think he's crazy! They're not really supposed to be talking to him, but whatever, they're rebels, okay? Totally hardcore rebels without a cause. (Spencer just rolls his eyes whenever Brendon and Ryan say that because really? He had to deal with a lot of paperwork to get special permission for them to get off the rotational imaginary friend assignment list or something.) Main Character Guy's Imaginary Friend likes to hang out with them sometimes, even though Spencer's bitchface can be a little intimidating, but that's only because Spencer hates the stupid tambourine Ryan gave him and wants his drums back.
Main Character Guy goes around doing stupid things/not living the life he always wanted and his Imaginary Friend wanders along next to him trying to get him to stop doing stupid things/go out and do something with their life! (Also shaking his head and mocking Main Character Guy, but that's a given.)
Shenanigans! (Wacky shenanigans, even!) And uh, some of that True Love! thrown in there too, maybe?
...I'm totally picturing Panic as those girls in Little Shop of Horrors who burst into song all the time right now, and it's hilarious.
P.S. Someone also needs to write a Little Shop of Horrors AU.
