Knitters!

For those on my Flist that knit (or know those who do), I'm interested in learning how to knit and after looking around online find myself a bit overwhelmed. (I would ask my mom to teach me, but god, that would be an absolute nightmare. She would traumatize me and my dream of eventually becoming skilled enough to knit myself warm, fuzzy socks would be forever crushed. ;_;)

It seems that a scarf would be a good starting project and there are a great many sites that offer patterns and such, but what I'm really looking for is what are the basic tools I would actually need to get.

What type and size of needles should I get? Do I actually need anything other than a pair of needles, or would I wind up confusing myself by getting things I won't actually need to use until I'm working on a more complicated project? Is there something I'm missing? Are there things I need to know/consider before I pick a project and try my hand at actual knitting? Is there a site or book that you have found to be particularly helpful for you, or that might be perfect for a someone learning to knit?

I have yarn, so much yarn, from my plastic canvas projects so all I'd need to get would be the needles, I think? Any advice on the subject is welcome as I know nothing about the actual knitting process.
