Kyo challenged me, saying that it's impossible to make Ambershipping happen in canon. I say NAY, sir. This is part one of two or three...?
Title: Sweet Alyssum
Characters: Gold, Yellow
Rating: Mind-numbingly cute "G".
Challenge: Canon setting
Summary: After Red chose to be with someone else, rather than Yellow, Yellow is left by herself. Gold starts paying her visits, to keep her company.
It had made a lot of sense for Red to eventually find someone to settle down with. And there were a lot of options open for him - all throughout his journey, his charming demeanor was appealing to almost every girl he met (and even some guys, at this point). Even Erika, who would normally battle against rumors of certain affairs with more feminine company, was obviously amongst the possibilities.
Still, it was a big surprise to almost all of the Pokedex Holders that he didn't pick Yellow. To us, it didn't make any sense. The only Pokedex Holder that understood where he was coming from...was Yellow, herself.
And she seemed very resigned to her loss, warmly smiling at him and wishing for the best for him. We could see in her eyes that she wouldn't stop feeling such strong feelings for him. Yellow would never stop loving him. But she wouldn't dare hurt him, either, and let herself be alone instead, despite Red rather clumsily urging her to try and find someone, too. They were meant for each other, or so anyone thought. In the end, Red couldn't shake the feeling that he was becoming intimate with a friend. With family.
And understanding that, Yellow raised no fuss, felt no anger, felt no betrayal, and never urged him to move on. She simply accepted, supporting Red's decision with her quiet, loving smile.
We Holders worried about her for a while after that. A long while, really - we knew how good she was at faking her own happiness. And that was only because she always found something to be happy about, and focused all of her energy on that alone. No matter how much she was hurting. But she was good at hiding. Nothing in her routine changed because of it. Nothing of her personality faltered for a second. If you didn't know better, you'd have never known what happened. The only way we knew that she was really still hurting from it was the sad smile whenever Red was around.
After a month or so, which I'm sure seemed much longer to Yellow than it did to anyone else, she started showing signs of slowing down. For once, I saw dark circles under her eyes, even when we caught her sleeping out in the open as usual. I intended to approach her about that, because that behavior is ridiculous, but I came to her house to find none other than Gold, sitting in a chair and talking to her. And for once, I saw that happy, genuinely jovial smile on her face again. It was then that I realized how long it had been since I heard her laugh.
Yellow kindly invited me in, bringing up another chair near the sofa. Gold and I laughed together with our senior, satisfied with how happy our presence made her. After speaking at length with her, we decided to leave, promising that we would visit again.
Outside of her house, I asked Gold why he had gone to see Yellow, and he simply shrugged and winked at me.
"I figure what she needs right now is someone bothering her, instead of people leaving her alone. Might work for most people to let them recover, but Yellow needs people."
I was quiet for a bit, a little stunned by how insightful he was. Gold had a habit of surprising me, really, with that, and yet I never really came to expect it from him as a result. I nodded, letting him know that I was going to return to Oak's laboratory for now. He waved me off, and I walked back to work, not aware of the fact that Yellow had given Gold permission to stay over at her house that night, until he was ready to go home himself.
