AU Story
Looking For You in the Sky Once upon a time, there was a dragon (Adam), kept in control by the Singers who would sing constantly to keep the dragon calm.
But every Singer can falter, and when that happens, the dragon attacks.
Queen Leverier had run the country with the law that if a couple had more than two children, one boy and one girl, they would have to give up the child to the dragon. For girls that meant becoming Singers, for the boys, it meant becoming slaves--or worse: food.
But the population of Singers was dwindling, and people were being more careful about having children--or sneaking children to the childless couples.
When the previous Singer, a young girl named Dorothy (Doug), was killed, the Queen put out a new order that all female children under the age of puberty were to be (forcefully) volunteered to be Singers. With the order, the soldiers of the kingdom, called the Crow, began collecting young girls from their houses, with or without the parents' consent.
One of the such children was "Julia" Walker who was actually a boy, named Robin. Robin and Allen were twins raised by Mana Walker, who had taken them in because their birth mother already had two children and didn't wish to see the twins taken from her. Robin was disguised as a girl so that the two twin boys wouldn't have to be separated. However, this ploy came to be the wrong decision when it became clear that Robin would be taken from the family regardless.
When the soldiers forced their way into the house, Mana attacked them, but was slain. The children clung to one another, but Robin was still stolen away. Allen was left to live with his "uncle", a man named Marian Cross. Allen feared what they would do to his brother when they figured out the ploy. His nightmares jumped between mourning for his dead father and wondering when Robin would be fed to the dragon.
As he grew older, Allen searched endlessly for ways to get his brother back. Joining in on the secret rebellion against the Queen.

Paradise of Light and Shadow "Julia" kept himself hidden as well as he could, making friends with another Singer, Lenalee Lee, who had been taken from her family and missed her older brother, Komui terribly.
They were part of a group of Singers who would trade off days to sing. The Singers would sing for several hours straight before trading off with another Singer, so that there was always someone singing for the dragon to keep him calm.
It was told that if the dragon was let loose, he would destroy many towns and kill many people. A few of the girls wondered why someone didn't just kill the dragon while they sang it calm, but they were told that wasn't possible. In truth, the dragon was kept by the Queen as a threat against the other countries. No country would touch them as long as they were afraid a crazed, dangerous dragon could be easily let loose to destroy the other kingdoms.
The Singers were kept in old temples that were built to praise and worship the dragon--but now were falling apart. The temples were deep under a mountain, kept secret from the rest of the kingdom. The Singers who tried to run away were stopped by the Priests and Priestess of the dragon, who were possessed by the Masks of Noah.

Allen was part of the group of the rebellion that attacked the Queen's quarters, but when he thought he had her for sure, Lavi attacked him to defend the Queen. Lavi was an apprenticed Bookman who was trained as a warrior and was under the Queen's care while her mentor, the current Bookman, was busy watching over a negotiation between two warring countries. The Queen didn't know that Lavi had been left to watch and record the growing rebellion.
Lavi was forced to act as one of the Queen's defenders to keep her place at the castle, but during the fight with Allen, she began to have a change of heart. Allen used the fight to yell at the Queen about his 'sister' and about how so many families had been torn apart by the Queen and her pet dragon. His words brought Lavi to remember a young girl who had been her friend between records while Bookman had been away--a girl named Dorothy (Doug). But Dorothy had disappeared just before Bookman had come back, when Lavi went to her house to talk to her parents, they had chased Lavi away, refusing to answer questions. Lavi suddenly connected that with the name on one of the lists of deceased Singers--Dorothy. She had been taken away to be a Singer and then died at the hands of the dragon, Lavi realized.
Changing her stance, Lavi shifted sides to attack the Queen instead--but one of the Crow, a man named Howard Link, stopped her. Lavi helped Allen escape, along with several of the others in the group who had been caught, including the mage Komui Lee, and the thief Yuu Kanda.
The four of them were on the run, stopping by various towns to hunt for hints to get to the dragon's undercity temple where the Singers were trapped.
When Lavi told them of Dorothy, the rest of the group shared their stories. Komui told them of his sister, Lenalee who he wanted to save while he still could. Allen told them of his 'sister' who he was looking for, keeping Robin's gender a secret still. Kanda kept quiet but said he was looking for someone too, his friend, Alma Karma.
Kanda and Alma had been part of the experiments trying to make it so boys could be Singers--because it was rare to find any boy who the dragon would accept a song from. (Unknowing that 'Julia'/Robin was actually a boy at the time.) While the experiments had failed for Kanda, they had succeeded for Alma. Kanda had escaped, but still wanted to free Alma from the dragon's clutches. Alma, meanwhile, was pretending to be a girl so he could fit in with the other Singers.
The four rebels traveled far and wide, meeting with people who also wished to end the time of the dragon, and towns that had heard of them and celebrated the idea of not having to practically sacrifice their daughters to the dragon's entertainment and eventually its teeth.
These towns were willing to fight the Queen and her Crow to give the group time to get to the dragon's temple and complete their quest. The Crow were searching for the rebels, trying to stomp out the seeding of ideas against the Queen, but the ideas were taking root and growing too strong to fight.
When the group of rebels finally got to the temple, they found one more problem--the Priests and Priestesses. Caught up in the possession of spirits in their Masks, they were quite a fighting force, and it was costly on the group, losing many of the people who had followed them into the temple.
The last Priestess had been named Tyki Mikk in her life, but was now possessed by the Noah Mask of Joyd. The battle was harsh on their already tired skills. Komui, Kanda, and Lavi collapsed under the pressure, even as Allen persevered on until he was able to destroy her mask and leave the powerless and muddled Tyki behind.
Knowing he had little time, Allen rushed ahead, searching for the Singers and hoping his brother was still among them somewhere, safe from the dragon's rage at his temple being destroyed and his Priests and Priestess exorcised.
