If you asked anyone in law enforcement, they would tell you that the holidays always brought out the most extreme craziness and that Halloween was especially active.
But National City was surprisingly tame when it came to over the top mischievousness.
The people who lived in the commonwealth fell into two categories: there was the more old fashioned mindset who tended to decorate their homes with various monsters or skeletons, their windows covered with orange and purple lights, while the more modern thinkers had their homes covered in cobwebs and spiders and their lawns littered with inflatable ghosts, pumpkins, wolves and witches.
It was all wonderful and innocently spooky.
Of course, most people forgot about the Halloween of 2013. It was a couple days before Oct. 31st when clowns randomly appeared on various street corners, playgrounds and parks and they would just stare menacingly at people but that turned out to be a circus fraternity prank.
Most of the citizens enjoyed the “scary” activities like visiting haunted houses, going on ghost walks, or getting lost in corn mazes. The most crime the cops had to deal with were fights at farms when the pumpkin and turnip carving contests got a little too heated, or the occasional drunken idiot on a hayride, but there was never any actual harm done.

The robot invasion started well before dawn.
When the first 911 call came in, the police emergency dispatchers from the 113th precinct thought they were being hacked.
But then more panicked phone calls started pouring in and what was at first thought to be unbelievable was turning out to be true: National City was under attack.
A squadron of robots, some as tiny as two feet, some as massive as eight, were roaming the streets of National City, roughing up citizens.
There were reports of robots smacking people, yanking them out of their cars and even throwing them into buildings.
By the time Kara Danvers and Natasha Romanoff were sent out to investigate, the robots had turned even more violent-they were now using firearms and other weapons.
One terrified woman reported a robot armed with a pistol hunting her through her apartment building and she was only able to escape because the robot randomly changed directions.
The battle continued throughout the city, people barely escaping from robots wielding knives and cleavers when the police heard several reports of shoot outs at the National City Mall.
By the time the detectives got to the crime scene, the shooting had stopped but not because the victims found a way to stop them or to even fight back, but because the robots simply ceased firing.
And then just as suddenly as the robots appeared, they’d vanished, disappearing from the city in a blink of an eye.
The police and sheriff departments did a sweep of all structures, streets and alleyways but there wasn’t any trace left of them.
Natasha and Kara exchanged worried looks, their crime-fighting instincts screaming at them that there was still something sinister afoot.
Nat took one look at Kara’s pensive expression and wisely kept quiet, knowing her partner was processing everything.
“It’s almost like this was a test or a trial run,” Kara spoke hesitantly. “Despite all of the mayhem, not a single person was seriously injured.”
It was true: rubble cluttered the streets, buildings were partially destroyed, and vehicles smashed to bits, but not a single person had any life-threatening injuries.
“Perhaps whoever is behind this wanted to see our response time or what our defenses consisted of?” Kara pondered. “Maybe they wanted to see how we’d handle the chaos?”
Because after a clash with crazy robots, victims should be filling the hospitals and urgent care facilities, but it was oddly quiet.
Yes, people had deep cuts and abrasions and others were badly bruised and beaten, but no one had any broken bones or were shot, maimed or killed.
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this crime has Lex Luthor’s name written all over it, but we all know Lex is currently incarcerated in Metropolis,” Nat cheekily replied.
Kara smilingly shook her head at Nat’s words. “I think it’s safe to say that if and when the robots attack again, they won’t miss any of their targets.”
The detectives exchanged another uneasy glance, their sense of foreboding only intensifying.

Somewhere in the tunnels beneath L-Corp…
The once sane and respected scientist Lena Luthor cackled in delight while she watched Kara Danvers and Natasha Romanoff being interviewed on the evening news. “National City’s Best Cops?! More like National City’s prize fools!”
She turned and without missing a beat of her rant, started pacing the length of the room, the silvery metal that encased her robot army reflecting against the dim lighting of the underground lab, turning her once healthy alabaster skin into an alarming shade of gray.
”Today I showed mercy to the miscreants of National City, but no more. They think they’ve won, that they’ve beaten me, but I’ll show them. I, and I alone, can control my robot army and next time they’ll see true damage done!”
Lena paused to lovingly stroke the face of the robot closest to her. “Once I destroy National City, they’ll know I’m the Luthor to be feared!”
