Guess I'll start logging what apps have been tried, since there's so many out there.

Games:
* TapDefense (free, ad-supported) - defense tower game, fairly decent time-waster
* Topple (free) - balance the blocks game; Angie likes to play it
* S. deadbeef (free) - pretty good shooter; battery drainer :)
* Monopoly (paid) - don't think it was quite worth the price, but is very well done
* platinum sudoku (paid) - very good sudoku app
* pacman lite (free) - single level version of pacman. enough for wasting a little time, but don't like pacman enough for paid version
* freepiano2 (free) - 2 octave piano
* lux touch (free) - risk clone, is okay. endgame is pretty lousy (blitzkrieg generally wins)
* sol free solitaire (free) - very good solitaire app
* tap tap revenge (free, ad-supported) - guitar hero-ish clone. is... eh.
* blue defender lite (free, 7 levels per play) - shooter. quite challenging. uses tilt sensor to determine shooting direction

Silly:
* iHandyLevel (free) - silly use for the tilt sensors
* free kanaquiz (free) - kana quizzer
* MyMote (free) - MythTV controller
* urbanspoon (free) - find places to eat. haven't actually really used it
* 5800+ drinks (free, ad-supported) - drink list and recipes
* i can has cheezeburger (free) - feed from icanhascheezeburger and related sites. silly

Util:
* touchcalc (free) - pretty good scientific calculator (has hex!)
* units (free) - convert units. better than some of the others tested
* checkplease (free, ad-supported) - tip calculator; ads are unobtrusive
* NYtimes (free, ad-supported) - NY times; formatted well and easy to read
* 1password (free) - password keeper. best one found so far, but not trusting it quite yet.
* pocketpedia (free) - database program; uses amazon to populate data. dunno...
* movies (free, ad-supported) - theatre listings, trailers, etc.; convenient to look up movie trailers and theatres
* bookshelf lite (free) - can access baen free library directly!
* aol radio (free) - access some streaming audio (many sky.fm streams)
* public radio (free) - access NPR & public radio streaming (like WBUR)
* google mobile apps (free) - google stuff
* touchterm (free) - SSH client; good use of screen real-estate, but I wouldn't do work on it
