early morning, cooooooold taxi

I was just thinking about how it has been a while since I've bothered writing anything worth reading about. As a friend recently put it, one of my latest updates is a survey for 15 year olds. Sometimes you just have to create bookmarks, if that's possible.

I'm not sure where November has gone. The month has flown by with an unprecedented speed. Since roughly the 10th of the month, however, I have been on a semi-downward spiral. I have ditched a few classes and increased my sleeping.

On the other hand, I did finish a book. I have gotten out of bed, more days than not. Showering, though not as consistent as before, has been happening. And, most importantly, my mood, though subdued and a bit lethargic, has been stable. One must remember to record not just one side of things, but to record as much of the whole picture as possible.

The book, in case anyone was wondering, was Larry McMurtry's Cadillac Jack. It wasn't a bad read; I checked it out over a month ago, and liked the feeling it was producing, that wistful bittersweet feel, so I dragged it out for a while. I'm finally on the Michael Chabon boat, years later. I must confess, however: I've only read one page so far. Verdict: LOVED it. Thanks to a teacher and some friends, I may have inadvertently discovered a new, contemporary, author I'd like to read.

Gambling has been a relatively fruitless endeavor. Of the past 4 or 5 times, we've come home ahead 2 or 3 times, broke even once, and broke the other 1 to 2 times. Consequently, this family affair has rendered us with shoestring holidays. But I don't care; I'm just glad the holiday season is here.

Yes, that's right: I am glad the holiday season is here. No, I don't like Christmas. Yes, I do like Thanksgiving (and this Saturday's proposed "Deadsgiving"). I always make such ambitious plans for the holiday season but rarely follow through.

I think this may be the year I follow through.

For, though there was that rough patch from April to mid-June, life has been rather pleasant this year. 2009, for the record, has been one of the best years in recent memory. I have won over 7k gambling, my niece was born, I came back from the brink, I went camping for the first time, I did get laid, I had a kickass summer, Mad Men, the drinking has been pleasurable, my mood has been more stable than usual, and just great times with great people.

I've been thinking that I should do a year-end-best-of type thing. I'm not sure entirely how I'd work it out. So far, I know I'm going to do a "best of the decade" for movies, and try to chronicle the decade (which for me began on the 7th of August, 1999) as best I can.

The 2000s saw many, many, miraculous developments:

-music culture (with personal discoveries such as The Smiths and Neil Young)
-an excellent decade for film (even if it petered out toward the end)
-better family relations
-love and lust
-a college education
-literary awakenings (Orwell and Camus, to name but two)
-studying of Spanish and Russian
-breaking up with Jesika (yeah, that was one of the best things that happened)
-reconnected with the trio (W.T. and Brian Green)

I could go on. It's amazing how many firsts can occur from age 13 to 23.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the first legitimate update in what seems like forever.
