Riku has already come a long way since I brought her home. She still doesn't talk, but she's much more interactive with people than she used to be. Yesterday, in fact, she actually took initiative to interact with one of my clients...or rather, my client's child. The lady had come in with her infant son for a fitting. The boy slept well at first, but he woke up at a point where I couldn't let the lady move because I'd have to redo the pinning. He started to cry, and without anyone asking her to, Riku went over and played with him until he not only stopped crying, but started laughing. She kept him entertained and smiling until the fitting was finished, and when the lady thanked her, instead of backing away like she used to, Riku actually smiled and bowed her "You're welcome".
I'm also learning that Riku is a bright girl. She writes very well and is able to do the more difficult math problems that I give her. It's a little hard to tell if my attempts at teaching her to read are working, since she doesn't speak and I can't hear her read aloud. I've been giving her books to read, children's books, and she claims she's finished with them in less time than I would expect... But when I ask her questions about the book's content, she answers them correctly. I'm inclined to think it's working.
That all aside, things are going well here. Business has been slightly slower with the Aquila in the news again, but fortunately not slow enough that I'm suffering for it. Since there are more Guards about, I think it's my hidden Anima clients that are staying home more, and understandably so. Even if the Aquila is top on the Guards' list, those of us in hiding do need to be more careful. The Guards are watching for anything suspicious, and we can't take the risk. I'm actually enjoying the slower pace. I can focus on my work and work more efficiently, which means I am finished more quickly than usual and this, in turn, leaves me more time to devote to myself and to Riku. It actually almost feels like a 9-5 job, for a change. :)
