Oh, 2010! What a year! I began 2010 overly positive. I had no plans but for some reason a strange optimism dusted every thought I had about the coming year. This positive feeling seemed to echo through the whole year and consequently many life changing things occurred that I never expected would. So what happened? Here's the year in review:
Where did I go?
Melbourne city, Olinda, Dandenong Ranges, Cairns, Gordonvale, Port Douglas, Mossman. I plan to do much more travelling in 2011, what with Karl and I intending to procure driving liscenses and all. We'll be foot loose and fancy free this coming year.
What happened?
Got engaged to the love of my life. Adopted to gorgeous kittens. Went to the Tim Burton exhibition. Visited the Titanic exhibition at the museum. Dyed my hair blue, green, red, and white. Lost EIGHT kilos. Was asked to become an ambassador for Monash University. Found my passion in life and kicked ass at it. Received my highest mark at university (97%). Received the Dean's Scholar Award for Excellent Academic Achievement, twice!! Had my right eye enucleated after years of emotional turmoil and physical pain. Was fitted for an artificial eye by the best artist in Australia. Looked in the mirror and for the first time saw two big, blue eyes. Completed my second year of university. Finally fit into a size 12, and even a size 10!!
Obsessions?
LUSH!! Body Combat, Body Pump and fitness in general. Reading. Vogue UK. Huge earrings. Bangles. Silver. Pink glitter on everything. Orange hair. Tight curls. Illustration. Nazi Germany. Clean eating. High-waisted skirts.
Best things I did for myself?
Got fit: I lost eight kilos and feel (and look) the best I have in years. I eat better and move more. The daily gym addiction is a good one to have. Finally got eye surgery: I had suffered from terrible eye pain and a disfigured appearance my whole life and losing that eye was the best thing that will ever happen to me. I am a different person; I am myself. Changed my university major to history: I have always taken an active interest in history (only reading historical fiction and non-fiction for example) but I never realised how much I loved it until my friend convinced me to take a history classat uni and ta-dah! I have revealed a long concealed passion and started my new major. Became an optimist: I have always been a glass half empty kind of gal but this year I made a conscious effort to think more positively about myself, my goals and most importantly, other people. It made reaching my goals less stressful and gaining friends a whole lot easier.
Best Meals?
Christmas eve dinner: Cider glazed ham, turkey breast, terrine and black forest trifle. Need I say more? Birthday dinner at France-Soir: Filet-mignon, escargots in a beautiful garlic sauce, pork sausage with mustard followed by a home-baked pink velvet cake. Yes!
Top Five Purchases?
Lush Angels on Bare Skin Cleanser: This is literally the best skin product I have ever tried. Based on a medieval recipe it cleans my pores and leaves my skin insanely soft and smooth. And it's vegan too! Pure Mineral Source eye shadow: I'm so glad I discovered this make-up store on Etsy.com. The eye-shadow colours are some of the most stange and vibrant I have ever seen. Backpack: Yes, boring I know but seriously, taking a hand bag to uni and holding all of your books in your arms (because they don't fit into your bag) is ridiculous. I saved myself a lot of back and shoulder pain by buying a back pack. Kittens: I love our two furry children. I have missed them so much while on holiday and I can't wait to see them tomorrow. Gym membership: I am the fittest I have ever been. I am the lightest I have ever been (68Kgs) and I am the happiest and most confident I have ever been.
Most loved movies and television shows?
Glee. Hamish and Andy's Caravan of Courage (Australia, America, and Britain). Who killed Nancy? Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Dexter.
Best Reads?
The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood. Alias Grace - Margaret Atwood. A Social History of the Third Reich - Michael Grunsberger. Oryx and Crake - Margaret Atwood. The Georgics - Virgil. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - J.K. Rowling. Demian - Hermann Hesse.
Couldn't live without?
Karl and my girl friends. Glitter on everything. Inappropriately large earrings. Lush's Angels on Bare Skin Cleanser and Sympathy for the Skin body butter. My two kittens. Bright white cross trainers. Vibrant eye shadow. A good book. My family.
So, that was 2010. It was a doozy. Now I am going to pack all of my gorgeous Christmas gifts into a suitcase with the trash I carry everywhere and head back to my home, my kittens and my life. Thanks Cairns, you've been great to me. I will remember the Thai food, the beaches, the constant rain all set to the sound of Depeche mode pumping in my brain. And thank you 2010! It was the most eventful, blissful, life-changing year I can remember. I have a very positive feeling about the coming year and look forward to all it's surprises. So, until 2011 I bid you adieu!
2010,
