summary: All her daughter yearned for was something Sungmin could give but was afraid of giving her - the paternal figure she had wanted for so long. Who would've thought that Cho Kyuhyun would waltz back into her life, in ways neither of them expected?

Sungmin felt a sudden jolt of fright pulsating throughout her body the moment the brightly-lit set became pitch dark. She felt as if the dark void was going to eat her, without her even noticing it; engulfing her into a place without light. The horrible thought made her scream in fear and reach out to the nearest person to her, hoping to find something that would get her mind off of the imagery of the dark. At least with holding onto someone, she’ll be rest assured that she wasn’t alone - she’d feel more comfortable.
In no time, a hand reached out for her and held her close. It was none other than Kyuhyun.

“Hold on tight, close your eyes, it’s going to be okay..” She could feel his breath as he whispers into her ear, which causes her to feel a chill going down her spine. She grasped his shirt and closed her eyes shut, feeling Kyuhyun’s hand embracing her tighter, closer.

“Don’t let go… I can’t see a thing.” She squeaked, head still hung low in front of Kyuhyun’s chest that she could already feel his steady breathing. She could hear small steps coming closer and assumed that it was her daughter, Minhyun - her daughter who was even braver than her when it comes to the dark. She was supposed to say something to reassure her of the situation when Kyuhyun spoke up and she decided to let it go.

She wasn’t used to the closeness between the two of them; it had been years since they last personally saw each other and despite still checking up on him, (with the use of the internet, of course. When you’re a famous, albeit hot actor, you’re going to have people conversing about you on the internet, publishing news and posting fantaken pictures of you. That was how industry was to them.) this sudden close proximity between them at such an unfortunate condition is making her feel uncomfortable.

They stayed like that for a while, unmoving with no words being uttered between the two of them. Sungmin wouldn’t have preferred it any other way - she wasn’t ready and she didn’t know when she will be.

Just then, she felt another set of footsteps approaching, but from a farther distance. As if on cue, the door creaks open, revealing a tinge of light coming from a flashlight and a dark figure holding on it. Sungmin couldn’t make out of the identity of the person who just barged in, until a voice boomed out calling for her.

“Sungmin, are you here? Answer me!” It was the voice of someone she knew so well, her manager, Henry. Recognizing the voice, she loosens her clutch of Kyuhyun’s shirt and responded.

“Henry? We’re here! I can see your flashlight, just.. move a little more - we’re at your left.” She instructed. She sees him coming closer and she tries to move towards him, careful of her steps and when they did reach each other, the electricity comes back, lighting up the whole room revealing four figures in the middle of the room.

Henry enveloped her into a casual and caring hug, alongside caressing her hair, fully aware of her phobia. “You okay?” He asks. She nods in reply before releasing herself from his hug.

She watches as he turns his attention towards her daughter and ask her how she’s been. She looked up to see Kyuhyun staring at her with questioning eyes, looking back and forth from Henry to her. The look on his face clearly states that he was confused at all that was happening and that even though he managed to warp his expression quickly, noting that he is an actor, Sungmin knows that Kyuhyun wants to hear an explanation from her.
Except, she wasn’t ready. She didn’t see it coming after all, she had tried sealing away the emotions from the past that she was afraid of letting them loose again now, years after. She turned to avoid his gaze and slowly made her way to her dressing room as hot tears started streaming down her face.

“I should’ve known, iced tea again. After all those years, your penchant for it hasn’t changed.” A deep voice interrupted Ryeowook, who was busy sipping iced tea, from her thoughts. She looked back and saw the man that invited her to meet up with him smirking down at her. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?” He added.

Ryeowook stood up from her seat in surprise. “Jongwoon…”

“Shocked to see me again? I wasn’t kidding when I said I’ll be back.” He walked towards the seat opposite of Ryeowook’s and sat down, holding up his chin with his right hand and arm on the table. He smiled at Ryeowook and nudged for her to take her seat.

“You didn’t come when you told me to in the park. How would I know that you weren’t kidding?” She scoffed and tried to look away, expressing her dismay at his failure to show up.

“I was there.” He replied calmly, observing as Ryeowook’s expression changes at his statement. “I was watching you the whole time.”

“Then why didn’t you come over and talk to me!? I was standing like an idiot in the park looking for you!” Ryeowook slammed her hands on the table. The loud sound had caught the attention of the other people who were having their lunch and were looking at the two of them. In embarrassment, Ryeowook slowly slid back to his seat, eyes never leaving Jongwoon.

“To be honest, I never expected you to come let alone answer your phone. You used to ignore all my calls back then and refused to meet with me.”

“Still you could’ve…” Ryeowook started but was quickly interrupted by Jongwoon.

“I know I could but I couldn’t bring myself to go near you because to be honest, I was afraid. It’s been what, five years since I last saw you? You went away with Sungmin, leaving me and Kyuhyun in the dark about what’s happening. Kyuhyun was crushed, I was devastated knowing that you two had decided to run off into god knows where without even telling us why.”

“But, Sungmin’s my best friend. She needed me and I’ll do anything to help her - I couldn’t leave her, Jongwoon, I was all she had left.”

“This is not about Sungmin. I know you loved her to the point that you’d do anything to support her, you’re bestfriends after all but have you two ever considered how Kyuhyun and I could’ve felt when you two left unannounced?”

“Do you hate me for that then?” Ryeowook’s eyes were downcast, avoiding the other’s gaze. There was a burning feeling of regret mixed with longing inside of her that made her want to burst in tears. She knew that what Sungmin and her did wasn’t fair for the other two but still, she chose to be by her best friend’s side.

“As much as I want to hate you, you should know that I can’t bring myself to do that no matter how much I tried.” He looked away and observed the bright sky above them while taking in a deep breath.

Ryeowook raised her head up and looked at Jongwoon in slight confusion. “Do you forgive me then?”

“Do I? I don’t know. Five years, Ryeowook. Five years of constantly being worried about you wellbeing for having no contact at all wasn’t a good experience.”

“What should I do to make you forgive me? I can’t handle knowing that you’re holding something on me. I-”

“Who cares whatever happened in the past, you can never bring that back. Be mine, just be mine again.” He cut her off before standing up to reach over and grab her face, sealing her lips with a chaste kiss.

Sungmin was quietly sobbing inside her dressing room, letting out her emotions when suddenly, the door clicked open making her jump in surprise. She felt relieved when she saw that it was Henry who went inside the room, making sure to lock the door so that no one would walk in on them talking.

“You feel like talking to me about it?” Henry said as he sat down beside Sungmin on the loveseat, patting the latter’s back. “Your make-up’s all smudged now.” He reached in his pocket and pulled out a clean handkerchief and offered it to her.

“Where’s Minhyun?” She asked as she took the handkerchief and dabbed it on her face to wipe off the ruined make-up.

“Oh, she’s with her father.” Henry said in reply before sitting back with his arms underneath his head, crossing his legs and looking at Sungmin with an amused expression. “And don’t you dare lie to me, Ming, I know for a fact that that man standing there is Cho Kyuhyun.”

“That’s the point, he’s Cho Kyuhyun. Oh Henry, it’s been so long since I’ve last seen him and I don’t know what to feel or how to react. I didn’t even know that he’s the one Minhyun was talking about.”

“You mean the guy she met at the park who supposedly reminds her of how you describe her father?”

“Yes, that. And this, this whole photoshoot, why didn’t you tell me that it’s going to be with him? It shocked me. Kyuhyun doesn’t know anything about Minhyun and I don’t know what to do…” She bit her lips, thinking about what she should do now that Kyuhyun’s back.

“I didn’t know it was with him. They just told me that it’s going to be with an actor, no one told me that it’s going to be Cho Kyuhyun. I guess this just means that it’s already time for you to stop running away. You know what you should do, Sungmin?”

She turned to look at him curiously and asked, “What?”

“Just tell him the truth. Tell him that you still love him, which I bet you do. Tell him how everything you’ve done was for him. Tell him that he’s Minhyun’s real father. Tell him everything, the truth. You can’t keep him away from the light forever.”
“Oh how I wish it was as easy as that…” She slumped back, heaved a sigh as she closed her eyes, not wanting her tears to betray her again.

“Why wouldn’t it be easy? Just tell him. Sungmin, the way he looks at you, I could tell. He’s still pretty much in love with you. Don’t you think he’d catch up on it soon? He could’ve noticed by now and was just waiting for you to tell him. What’s worse is that he gets the wrong idea.”

“I-I don’t know how I should do it, Henry. I keep on thinking how he would react if I told him that Minhyun is our child - would he accept her or not? I keep asking myself.”

Henry playfully knocked on Sungmin at the head. “Silly, she’s his child, why wouldn’t he accept her?”

“I really want to tell him but… I’m scared. It doesn’t help that he’s an actor on the rise, if people found out about this, I don’t think it’s going to be good.”

“Tell him when you feel that it’s the right time. Just don’t take too long.”

Sungmin nodded to herself and smiled back at Henry. “Yeah, by then I’ll be ready to be honest with him.”

“That’s the spirit. Now, come on, let’s go back to business, you have your job to do. Also, don’t let this interfere with your work okay? This photoshoot is no personal matter, do what the director says, okay?” Henry stood up and offered his hand to Sungmin who gladly accepted and pulled herself up.

The two went out of the dressing room and Sungmin gave Henry a hug before proceeding back to the set. “Thank you so much, Henry” She said to him. Unbeknownst the two of the them, there was a pair of eyes observing their actions from afar.

///

“She’s probably still scared because of the sudden blackout.” Minhyun’s sight followed Sungmin’s trail after Henry went to the dressing room to check up on her. She turned back to Kyuhyun who was still a bit dumbfounded by what happened, curious and suspicious at the same time. “She has a phobia when it comes to the darkness, you know.” She added.

“Yes, I know about that.” He replied.

“Mommy told me how she got that phobia, you want me to tell you? Let’s sit down.” She waited for Kyuhyun’s reaction and smiled when she saw him nod. Minhyun took hold of Kyuhyun’s wrist with both her hands and led him towards a seat.

“So, mommy told me that once that she stayed back in school to finish a project when she was locked in and the electricity was cut off. She stayed there for the whole night! Luckily, the next day a guy found her huddled up in a corner. Mommy never told me the whole story but you know what, that guy who saved her? That’s my-”

Kyuhyun felt himself smirking to himself as he recalled the moment the little girl was narrating. He knew very well of that occasion, in fact. “That was me. I was the one who found Sungmin.” He said proudly, waiting for Minhyun’s reaction.

“Eh? How is that possible? Mommy said it was my father who found her…”
Kyuhyun was about to respond when the door burst open revealing the director of the photoshoot, looking anxious. He stood up and approached him, asking him what’s wrong. Although there were things bothering his mind at the moment, he brushed it off for a while - he was there for work, after all.

“Where’s Sungmin?” The director asked, looking around for signs of the person he was looking for.

“She went off to the dressing room. Do you want me to bring her here?”

“Yes, please. You see there’s been some trouble in the photoshoot and I need to speak with the two of your regarding the arrangement.”

Kyuhyun nodded and went off towards the direction of the dressing room. It doesn’t really take long for one to locate which dressing room was Sungmin’s, seeing as there was a big nameplate that endowed the door leading to the room. Kyuhyun was about to proceed when the door opened, as Sungmin and the other guy, which he heard was named Henry, went out of the room. He watched as Sungmin spoke with her head low and suddenly embracing Henry. Kyuhyun could feel a spark of jealousy burning up inside of him but he knew that it wasn’t his place to be jealous. Heck, Sungmin had a lot of explaining to do.

He knew that he knows Sungmin from head to toe back then but how about now? All those years that they had been apart, there was no contact at all. He didn’t even know that she had a child - which was another issue that Kyuhyun couldn’t help but be greatly intrigued about. Who was her father?

There was this lingering hope inside of him that he may be the child’s father; the true biological father that Minhyun had been looking for. However, he wasn’t so sure. Despite all the facts that are blatantly laid down before him, it wasn’t the answer that he needed. What he wanted was Sungmin’s word - to tell him the whole truth, whether it is as he suspected.

He snapped out of his reverie when he saw Sungmin staring at him from where she was, as if asking what he was doing there except she was only speaking with her eyes. There was so much that he wanted to ask of her but he felt like Sungmin is trying to avoid him. Well, he wasn’t going to let her think that he was oblivious.

“Sungmin-ah, the director’s looking for the both us.” He drawled casually, emphasizing on her name. He watched as she hesitated in replying back so he cleared his throat and asked again. “Are you coming or not?”

“Y-yes, I am. Let’s go, we shouldn’t keep him waiting.” She walked pass him, avoiding eye contact. Kyuhyun followed her, making sure to put a distance between the two of them.

///

“There you two are!” The director exclaimed at the sight of Sungmin and Kyuhyun.

“Kyuhyun-ssi said you had something to tell the both of us?” Sungmin started, curious of what the director had to say. At the same time, she motioned for Minhyun to go with Henry who was just entering the set.

“You see, there has been a sudden change in the photoshoot. Instead, we’re changing the concept of the photoshoot. Also, later there will be reporters who will be coming who wants to cover the photoshoot. This is Kyuhyun-ssi’s first since his return so it has been gathering attention of the media.”

“I wouldn’t be needed for that interview, wouldn’t I?” Sungmin asked.

“Why, of course you need to be there, Sungmin! You’re his partner for the photoshoot, why would you not be included?”

“Well, it is focused on Kyuhyun-ssi so…”

“Nonsense! Kyuhyun-ssi, what do you think about it?” The director turned to Kyuhyun to see his reaction about the matter. Kyuhyun had a small smirk on the side of his mouth and replied, “Of course, I don’t mind. It would be good to have company too so it wouldn’t be an awkward interview. I’m looking forward to working with Min- Sungmin-ssi too.”

“It’s settled then.”

“So, about the concept?” Sungmin inquired, wanting to change the subject.

“It’s going to be on marriage. You and Kyuhyun-ssi would be portraying a married couple, in other words.”

As the words went out of the director’s mouth, Sungmin felt herself looking at Kyuhyun who was going to be her partner for the photoshoot. If that was the concept of the photoshoot then that just means that she’s going to have to be in a wedding gown while Kyuhyun, the supposed groom, would be in a tuxedo. She blushed at the thought; it had been her dream back then to be able to wear a wedding dress and have Kyuhyun as her groom and given the current situation, she couldn’t help but feel her mood go down.

“Please go to your respective dressing rooms already, I’ll call in the stylists. Let’s do this!” The director exclaimed with enthusiasm. He gave a pat on both Sungmin and Kyuhyun’s shoulder as encouragement.

Moments later, after the stylists have finished redoing Sungmin’s make-up and fixing her wedding gown which was a simple flowing white dress, she went out of the dressing room. The moment she went out, she found Kyuhyun, who was in a matching white tuxedo, waiting for her.

“Uh..?” She started.

“You look beautiful, Sungmin.” He said as he observed her from head to toe. Sungmin felt a tinge of red creeping up her cheeks at the compliment that she tried to turn away so that Kyuhyun wouldn’t notice. “T-thanks, you look good yourself.” And she wasn’t kidding - Kyuhyun did look good in his get-up.

“I wasn’t really expecting a compliment in return but thanks, Ming. Let’s go?”

Sungmin’s sight followed Kyuhyun’s hand which was extended towards her. She wanted to accept his hand but she was afraid that if she does, something inside of her would change.

“Yeah, let’s go.” She brushed past him, rejecting his offer. She walked towards the set, not looking back at Kyuhyun.

Kyuhyun, on the other hand, was fazed. He looked at his rejected hand before looking up to see Sungmin walking away. He stayed like that for a while when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned around and saw Henry smiling at him.

“Aren’t you supposed to be with Minhyun?” He started before Henry could begin talking.

“Yes, but she’s taking a nap at the moment.” He replied, releasing his hold of Kyuhyun’s shoulder.

“Is there anything you need from me?”

“She’s not ready yet, give her time and she’ll explain everything. Don’t make her more stressed as she is.” Henry said, referring to Sungmin.

“Are you telling me that I’m making her act this way then?”

“What do you think?” Henry retorted before walking away. Kyuhyun could only watch as his figure disappeared from the corner.

Was there something he did that’s making Sungmin act the way she is doing?
