Chapter Two

“Masks are just mistaken for indifference...”

Yuu woke up as he heard a loud banging sound and a muffled voice outside his apartment door. He didn’t make any move to stand up and confront the person who was practically trying to break his apartment door down and just lazily reached for his alarm clock that sat neatly on his bedside table. His free hand rubbed his eyes lightly, attempting to clear away the blurry images he was currently seeing since he just woke up. The action was, however, all in vain because his clock has apparently stopped working.

The sun was not that high yet as of what he can tell from the faint sunlight that seeped through his almost transparent satin window curtain. Whatever the time was at the moment, Yuu was pretty sure he wasn’t supposed to get up yet.

Yuu pulled his comforter over his head and groaned loudly, before jumping out of bed. He marched towards the door shamelessly, obviously pissed off at the unfortunate being that was disturbing his sleeping time. A pissed off Yuu was not a pretty sight, and whoever encountered Yuu in a very bad mood is lucky enough to get away with only a sore cheek, which was way better than being attacked by his harsh words.

Of course, that’s what other people kept on saying-which was of great exaggeration-and caused him to have only a handful of friends and among them who are to be called real are even fewer, almost close to none. He doesn’t really mind it most of the time, but there are occasions when he just can’t help but feel a bit bothered.

After all, he’s just human.

Yuu slammed the door open upon reaching it and put on a scowl-not caring about who the person at his door might be. He was greeted by a brunette wearing a big grin on his face as if showing his dimples. He was about as tall as Yuu, but his body was slightly well-built unlike Yuu’s.

Upon realizing who was standing in front of him, Yuu plastered the sweetest fake smile he can give.

“Yukkun, what’s the time?” he asked in an irritably sweet tone, which was obviously filled with sarcasm.

“About… five minutes before six.” The brunette just kept on smiling at Yuu innocently, but to Yuu, it looked more like a mischievous grin. Yuu decided to drop his act-his face quickly returning to a pissed off look. He rolled his eyes and slammed the door shut, which earned him a whine from the brunette. In a matter of seconds, banging sounds resonated in the room once more. Yuu wasn’t able to resist and reopened the door. He’d rather condition himself in to finding out what the other wanted from him than risking his door to break.

“That hurts!” The brunette rubbed his nose and frowned.

“What do you want, Yutaka?!” Yuu glared at Yutaka-who stopped rubbing his nose, and started to scratch the back of his head instead.

“I… I kind of… lost my apartment key and-hey!” Yutaka practically jumped on Yuu the moment he realized Yuu was preparing to slam the door, again.

“Please, Yuu! I promise I’ll only stay overnight! My key is just probably somewhere in my bag…”

“Yutaka, if it’s you who lost it, it’s most likely that it’s gone for good.” Yuu replied bluntly before letting Yutaka get inside the room.

“Thank you, Yuu! You’re the best! And for that, I will cook something for you! I bought some vegetables at my hometown yesterday. They’re for the event our school is having today, but I’m pretty sure I bought a lot of vegetables so I’m sure we won’t really run short later on even if I…” Yutaka kept on babbling about stuff Yuu has little concern of, but Yuu appreciates his company anyway-no matter how annoying Yutaka can be.

“Just don’t burn anything, alright? And clean up any mess you make. Oh, and I won’t go to school today. I have work.” Yuu sat by the dining table and decided to just stare at his fingers with boredom written all over his face. Since he was already awake, he’ll already have trouble going back to sleep.

“But today is Monday, isn’t it? It’s supposed to be your day off. And instead of doing nothing, why don’t you copy my notes from our class? They should be in my bag-”

“I feel lazy at the moment. Just have them photocopied for me when you get to school.”

“You’re always lazy when school is involved.” Yutaka chuckled as he added the final touches to Yuu’s meal.

“At least I still go to school.” Yuu replied cheekily. Yutaka opened his mouth, about to retort something, but immediately stopped himself-thinking the supposed witty statement he was going to say was a bit out of context.

“Help yourself!” Yutaka announced happily as he placed a plate full of delicious looking meal on the table in front of Yuu. Yuu wore a small smile before he started to eat slowly; while Yutaka sat himself on Yuu’s couch.

“What are you doing there?” Yuu asked, his question sounding more like a statement.

“What? Am I not allowed to sit on your couch?” Yutaka asked teasingly. When Yuu didn’t even spare him a glance, he felt his heart beat fast, feeling that Yuu wanted to put an end on their little charade.

“I have an ointment for bruises in my bathroom cabinet. Feel free to use it.” Yutaka could only grin bitterly before muttering that he’ll just use the ointment later. He rubbed his cheek, where the bruise Yuu was talking about was displayed. It was faint, but not the type where it is close to healing.

Suddenly, it became stuffy in the room as Yuu continued to savour his food while Yutaka was practically frozen on his seat, hugging his knees. Once Yuu finished eating, he broke the silence between him and Yutaka.

“You didn’t really lose your keys, did you?” Yuu leaned uncomfortably on his chair and threw his head back to blankly face the ceiling as if it was something interesting to look at.

“No. I failed to pay the rent for three months now, so…”

“You can stay here for a while.”

“Thanks. I’ll just contribute with the rent of this place whenever I can.”

“No, it’s alright. Just focus on the reason why you came here in Tokyo in the first place.” Yutaka was taken aback by what Yuu said.

For the one and a half years they’ve known each other, Yuu will often persuade Yutaka to go back to his hometown-bluntly stating that he won’t be able to survive living in Tokyo alone. During the first time Yuu urged Yutaka to go back his real home, Yutaka didn’t feel anger despite the fact that he was being belittled with his capability on surviving on his own, but instead felt that someone actually cared about him. It’s not that no one ever did care about him before, but the fact that someone took notice of him, someone who was outside of his comfort zone; it was something to be happy about. From that moment on, Yutaka started to open up to him more than he did to anyone before, while from time to time, Yuu did the same.

Within those one and a half years, they’ve learned to treat each other more like brothers than friends. They developed a strong bond through the pains they both experienced in their life to the point where they knew each quite well-but not too well.

“Why did we even play this game?” Yutaka whispered.

“Well, you started it!” Yutaka can’t help but chuckle at how blunt Yuu can talk at any situation.

Even at times like this, you still like to wear that mask…

Author's Notes:
Kai's role is quite bigger than what I though it will be. OH and sorry for the poorly written chapter... I'll do my best on the next one... which may be late because I'll be away for 2 days.

Feel free to leave comments, violent reactions, etc. Correct me if there's a need to in terms of grammar and such. ^^
