“Mmmm….” Kazuo frowned as he cradled the baby in his arms. It was a tiny sleeping bundle with a tuft of hair on his head. To anyone else babies looks just the same, but to the family and doctors, each baby is unique, carrying visible physical characteristics of those who contributed to its creation.
“He has his mom’s eyes and his dad’s nose,” Kazuo squinted. “If you look really hard. But you’d better not have your daddy’s bad personality, okay?” He cooed to the child, eliciting a giggle from Mihoko. Kousaku merely snorted. “Give him back.”
“Relax~! It’s Saejima’s turn next,” Kazuo gleefully handed the baby to the flight nurse, who cuddled him in delight. Kousaku didn’t know whether to be annoyed or proud. Still, his wife was looking radiant and happy. Tired, but happy.
His wife. It felt a little… tingly even after almost six months of marriage, to call someone that. To belong to someone, and to have that person belong to him too. He experimentally called out Megumi’s name in his mind. Aizawa Megumi.
It was a great feeling.
“Iyaa, so everyone is here?” Director Tadokoro appeared with Dr. Tachibana and Dr. Mitsui in tow. “Congratulations on a smooth delivery,” The aging doctor smiled as he presented her with a gift basket. “I’m really touched that you’d come to Shohoku for your delivery - to use the helicopter to come here even, in fact!”
“That was because both of you had the idiocy to go to the mountains when you were so close to your delivery date,” Mihoko glared at Megumi, who sweat-dropped. “Well it wasn’t like I was hiking or anything… ”
“We really didn’t deserve that earful from you,” Kousaku said almost sullenly. “Worst flight I ever endured.”
“Just goes to show even the brightest doctors can make some pretty stupid decisions sometimes, ne?” Kazuo had received the baby again and offered him to Dr. Mitsui, who looked amused but flattered. Dr. Tachibana winked. “You look at home right there, doc.”
“Shut up.”
“Have you thought of a name for him yet?” Haruka asked. “Since he’s your firstborn, might want to go with something reliable.”
“Strong,” Mihoko chirped.
“Sensible,” Dr. Tadokoro offered his two cents.
“No way!” Kazuo pulled a face. “He should have a flashy name.”
“We haven’t decided,” Kousaku’s words ended all bickering and Megumi smiled. “We thought we’d give it a few days… for now he’s just Baby.”
“Well don’t take too long.” Haruka nodded.
“And don’t decide without telling each other.” Mihoko snickered.
“Communication is important, especially for newlyweds,” Dr. Tachibana assumed a sagaic expression and Kousaku looked at each one in turn. “Are we even on the same topic any more?”
“More like… does everyone know?” Megumi groaned.
And everyone broke into a grin, and little Baby opened his eyes and gurgled. His parents immediately reached for him and to Mihoko, the love and care that she could see there was enough proof for the epilogue of this story. They both would be just…
“Come on, let’s have a picture!” Kazuo happily flipped his cellphone open and the new parents obliged, smiling at each other gently, proudly. Heat blossomed in her heart and Mihoko closed her eyes with the sense that whatever that had been wrong in the universe, is now back to normal.
That’s right. They’ll be fine. Just… fine.
A/N: And that, as they say, is that. Thank you to everyone who has persevered with this from the beginning… almost 2 years ago! I hope it has been worth the wait. Although the chances of me writing for Code Blue is almost none now (unless they make a season 3), I am open to suggestions to write for other fandoms.
Once again, thank you and big hugs!
