[Fanfic] Eyeshield 21 - Fearless

Author's Note: I realized that I had not written one whit about the Teikoku players - not even a single mention of them in over 100 fics that I penned. So here's for you, Teikoku!
“Kyaa!!”
Honjou Taka looked up immediately upon hearing Karin’s squeal. “What is it, Karin?”
The only female player in the entire Japanese Highschool American Football scene was standing on a chair, trembling like jelly and pointing to the ground. “There - there - there -“
“What on earth...” Even Yamato looked down and both boys arched their eyebrows simultaneously. But it was Taka who spoke first.
“A cockroach.”
Yamato hand snapped out and before Karin could squeal again, he had trapped the cockroach under a piece of paper. Only...
“Yamato, that’s my History test paper.” Taka plainly stated and Yamato blinked. “Oops. Sorry. I forgot I was holding it.”
“Nevermind what it was, get rid of it...!” Karin was near-hysterical now. “Get it away from me!!”
“So sorry Karin, Taka,” Yamato folded up the paper, squashing the cockroach. “I’ll have to throw your test paper away...”
“It doesn’t matter.” Taka resumed reading. “It’s an A. Crushing the paper or throwing it away doesn’t change that fact.”
Yamato excused himself to find a wastebasket and Karin slowly sat down again, hand pressed against her chest. “That was scary.”
“How can an insect be scary?” Taka asked without lifting his eyes from his book. “We are a hundred times bigger and stronger.”
“But.. but...” Karin fidgeted; “They can have stings... and... stuff.”
“Stings are just a temporary inconvenience.” Taka calmly turned a page. “One doesn’t stop a game just because we get tackled or sacked.”
“Mou, arguing against you is useless,” Karin sighed in defeat and picked up the book she had been revising. “So difficult to explain fear to someone who’s afraid of nothing.”
“What is this, a conversation going without me?” Yamato returned with a cheerful grin. “Who’s not afraid of anything?”
“Taka-kun is,” Karin rubbed her temples and Yamato laughed. “That’s true. But I’m sure he’ll meet it someday. The man who will teach him ‘fear’, that is.”
“I wonder if that day will ever come,” Taka murmured as he looked out of the window. Karin fished out her schedule and marked off the revision done for the day and her eyes fell on a note made further down.
The Christmas Bowl.
“...Deimon huh?” She smiled a little to herself. “I thought we’d be playing against Oujyou. This is certainly a surprise.”
“Well Deimon has some interesting people too,” Yamato chuckled. “What do you think, Taka?”
The receiver did not reply, his thoughts and gaze already far away. But at the back of his mind, it was there, a faint whisper.
Maybe someone there will show me ‘fear’.
