Oh well it's simple really! most of divintion is about using common place objects to allow your mind to see into the future.
Of course people like Dumbledore will tell you that the future is too uncertain to really know whats going to happen but what they dont understand is Divintion is about going through all the possible futures and finding the most likely one.
Divinition is also used to gain keener insight into issues in the present, for example you can use the tarot to find out what some one is really up to or if they're decieving you.
