I'm discontented with homes that are rented so I have invented my own

At last, the promised photos of my lovely little home. The Boyfriend and myself are still unpacking, arranging and settling in, and I look forward to the purchase of a beaded curtain and some fabric for drapes.

Please excuse the disorganization so far -- I'll post more photos when things are fully organized. Until then, enjoy!

First, I have to give you the "before" shot, to remind you all of where I used to live.

Try to add to this, if you can, the constant screeching of little children, the coughing and hacking of the smokers, the clouds of pot smoke coming through the windows, the blaring gangsta rap and someone bellowing, "GIT YO BROTHA! WHEAH ARE YO GODDAMN SHOES, FUCKIN IDIOT!"

Okay, so now you can see where I live these days....

Our little jungle cottage. Our own driveway, complete with a gate and a lock, so no one can come bother us or mess with our cars. The sound of birds, chickens, some puppies. Air that smells like plants. Not burning ones.

Love these guys. They're huge!

Our yard. We get a yard! It will soon be filled with Andrew's hammock and my herb-and-sunflower garden.

The view of the distant mountains.

The main house, behind us. This part of the house is being rented out to a nice young surfer couple.

In front of our house is a row of trees that keep us shaded from the street. The wooden porch wraps around this little wilderness bit.

Right now a lot of unpacked boxes are on the porch, but once we clear it up we'll have room for a table out there.

The landlords have planted mini coconut palms by just sticking fallen coconuts in a pot. Presto.

Entrance, of course. With my crazy owl bag on the hook thing.

The turtle, who turned out to be a girl by the way, so I changed her name to Mirabai, is happily at home on the shelf.

The livingtchen. The kitchen is not much bigger than my old one, but because it's so open and cleverly put together, it feels a lot bigger.

Sue freaked a little when she saw the kitchen. She said the potential for Bohemian decoration is amazing. I have to admit, I like the big beams all over.

My cup tree!

We got this jungle shower curtain for the old apartment, trying to make it feel more like we were somewhere exotic and marvelous. It fits much better here, in spite of the shower being smaller.

Our bedroom is still in progress. There's no door, so we're planning on buying a hippie style bead or shell curtain.

Aaaand one of our favorite parts of living here...

These geckos are SO LOVELY. There are tons outside, but even when a few baby ones get inside, they eat up all the little bugs, so they're welcome to us.

This guy liked my camera. I got him to lick my finger.

For now, life is pretty damned great. Suki, my timid cat, is the happiest she's been in years, and though we have a longer drive pretty much anywhere, The Boyfriend and I are happy to be here. Sure, there are some big roaches now and then, and a baby cane spider outside, but it's nothing we can't handle.

It seems like we're home at last.
