I rewatched "Once More With Feeling" (sixth-season musical episode of 'Buffy') last night, and 24 hours later I'm sitting here at the office, trying desperately to get my work done for tomorrow's classes but being prevented by the bridge and chorus of Spike's "Let Me Rest In Peace" that are running through my head incessantly.
Meanwhile, keeping up with DVDs that make Kit cry, "Once More With Feeling" did so, quite soundly. And yes, true to form, it has father-issues, but those aren't what makes me go all blubbery; no, it's all of Joss Whedon's damn key-change soul-wrenchers. You know the ones I'm talking about: those last lines of bridges and unexpected choruses that take it up a half-step and make you blink. And the part that absolutely made the episode was Giles' little solo-insertions ("What can't we face?", "Tell me!").
I love those kinds of double-fist-making/shaking moments and the spots in the songs where you know in a touring stage show, they'd flick off all the lights simultaneously and flip on the spotlight and throw some disco-ball action across the band as the music swells and the note goes uuuuup...!
That's the split second when the shivers come and don't leave until the song's rapture dies away.
I'm such a dweeb. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
