If It's In The Media, It Must Be True (duh!)j177jFebruary 8 2003, 16:39:42 UTC
I've never been a Michael Jackson fan (though I can recognise he has more natural talent than the majority of today's cardboard cut-out 'pop stars'). Therefore, I didn't bother to watch the Bashir doc. I wonder just how many people, who also aren't fans, did watch though, just because they wanted to see something salacious and/or ridiculous? And of course, there was the media, with its twin towers of hype & hypocrisy, practically wetting itself with glee over the 'disturbing' revelations.
Sure, MJ has a lot of mental/emotional issues, but I tend to think he's more sad than bad, and naive not evil. If he had genuine friends who would tell it like it is, rather than money-loving sycophants, he wouldn't have ended up the way he is now. But I'm not going to lose sleep over him or any other 'celebrity'. I do find myself wondering though, about all those people who put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) to vent their dismay/disgust about Jackson not being a fit parent; would they be so keen to become 'involved' if one of their neighbours didn't seem a fit parent? Still, why get involved when you can just turn up the telly and blot out reality!
