It's day 2, wednesday, here in Victoria at the Ocean Island backpacker's inn. After posting last night, I met up with my friend and we walked the entire downtown and out edges of Victoria twice over, talking, looking at the old buldings, and spending some special time on a 2 and a half story rock in pitch black Beacon Hill Park, looking out over the city and the harbour, with a bright moon overhead.
Today I managed to wake up at 11 am (I know, WOW), I went to miniature world, $9 (the circus is still my favourite, and the native villages are a close second) then headed over to the Royal BC museum, $14, I can't get enough of that place, it's the closest you'll ever get to going back in time. They added some new stuff to the natural history, but I was too early for the new undersea exibit opening next month (DAMN). There was this little old lady there, she said she's been to museums all over and none of them were like RBCM. I can't imagine they would be, it's just amazing, with the full scale old theatre, chinatown, farm, salmon cannery, part of captain vancouver's boat, the grand hotel, main street with all it's shops, plus all the stuffed animals, the re-created mammoth, full size, spirit and grizzly bears, elk, cougar, deer, squirrells, all native birds, sea otter, seals, walrus, it goes on and on. And the first nation's exibit is breathtaking with a scale longhouse and winter pit house.
After that I went in search of antique row, which was a bitter disapointment, I hit some neat shops, including a gag shop where I bought some plastic cocktail animals for my collection, and a store called "cleopatra's bedroom" which was full of terrible, crappy ancient egyptian decorations and jewelry, middle eastern glass oil perfume bottels and bellydancing scarves in all the colours of the rainbow, strung heavily with coins. I also ploughed through some comic book shops with some pretty sweet toy collections.
Quite by accident, I happened upon something I had planned to do when I planned this trip, but had since forgotten; an antique photo studio. I was very pleased and chose a Victoria era white lace dress with a high collar (similar to Rose's outfit when she has the lamb in the cafe in "Titanic") and the matching beautiful, wide, swoop brimmed hat with wreath of flowers and a long tulle bow and train. I chose the living room set and opted for a very proper looking picture, true to the era. $38.49 later I had my 8x10 sepia tone photo in an elegant brown matte. Unfortuantly, I had a splitting migraine, and you can tell in the picture, they also don't touch them up (for that price they should, it's not that hard!!!), so I'll have to do it. I paid for the experience though, which was nice, picking a girly dress and they dressed me, and having a great big fancy hat, it was nice.
I went to milestones for dinner, pina colada and an american burger, it was tastier here than in Poco.
Because I wasn't feeling well and my head hurt so much, I've come back earlier than yesterday.
Tomorrow I plan to see the bug zoo, which I've never seen before and am very excited about, it's the world's largest collection of tropical insects, LIVE tropical insects :D. And then I'm probably going to check out Utopia, this odd t-shirt shop, and resume the neverending search for gifts for my family.
Stay tuned!
