We've been back from the honeymoon for a week now and I've finally detoxed enough to remember it. Being back is not as good as being away.
*Rome was LOVELY. Everything about it. I was there once a few years ago but I was backpacking and had no money, so this time around it was nice to splurge.
*Our hotel was cute. We were on the 4th floor but the elevator was so tiny and scary that we just used the stairs. Plus they gave us a little beta fish in our hotel room, to keep us company. Man, we had some good times with that fish, playing poker and smoking cigars. Problem is, they had to feed the fish so they kindof ignored the "do not disturb" sign and came into our room all the time anyway. At least they left candy on the pillows.
*Also we had a big bathtub with jets and I wanted to bring it home
*For the first 4 or 5 days, we walked everywhere. We would get up early and spend the whole day looking at ruins and churches, more ruins and more churches, having cappucino the way the Romans do. Finally, by the beginning of last week, I told Charlie we had to take some public transportation because my feet were hurting. We had a fun habit of visiting things- the Colosseum or the Vatican- at night, then going back the next day. So we got to see everything all lit up, and then take the standard tourist approach during daylight.
*People were taking pictures in the Sistine Chapel and I wanted to punch them all.
*the food was the best ever. We ate a lot of gnocci. We drank a pitcher of wine with lunch every day (clearly the best part) and I wanted to bring this practice home but Charlie pointed out that this is looked down on here, sadly. My favorite meal was gnocci with blue cheese & pear sauce, and I tried a bite of Italian sausage that didn't make me want to puke.
*We ate a lot of gelotti. There was an amaretto kind that was especially awesome. The cashier at one place ripped us off by 5 Euros but we didn't want to fight with her in Italian, so we let it go.
*Charlie bought leather jackets. That's right, 'jackets' plural.
*I bought this half-sweater thing that I was unsure of at the time, but now I like it. I also bought a magnet of the Pope.
*There's this building, the Vittorio Emmanuale, which is like the hugest thing ever and you can see it from pretty much anywhere. Oddly enough, I don't remember it from my first trip. The Italians hate it, because it's an eyesore, and they call it the typewriter. But it kindof looks like a wedding cake. There's a museum inside that's pretty neat.
*The Pantheon has a hole in the ceiling, which I never realized. I always though it was covered in glass. Now I wonder what they do when it rains?
*On our last night there, we went to a restaurant near our hotel. Instead of handing us a menu, they read the courses out loud, so we had no idea of the prices. There was a little old lady cooking and she waved to us from the kitchen. The Italians do this 3-course thing- appetizer, pasta, meat/fish, and normally we'd just opt out and order one thing each. But the last night, we ordered the whole deal, with a full bottle of wine and everything. It was the longest meal ever. There was another American guy there- in this little tiny restaurant- and he gave us wine and bought us a shot and it was such a nice way to end the honeymoon.
*They played Robbie Williams everywhere we went. Just like London!
*We left our camera on the airplane, with like 1200 pictures on it. So, I have no documentation of any of this. booo
*My hubby is the best. he he, I have a husband.
