unsquared for meeting my challenge:3 lol I'm surprised I finished this so quickly, or that I even came up with something this fast. But I was listening to "You Rocked My World" by Michael Jackson and then out of of nowhere...BOOM! Inspiration!8DDD So here's your fluff, love^_^
Zoro hated the cold. He’d rather it be a hundred degrees out with a humidity so high it felt like you were swimming through the air while you walked. He could do things and train when it was hot, even if it was uncomfortable and he ended up drenched in sweat and smelling like a giant’s armpit. But when it got cold, all he could bring himself to do was huddle up in a ball somewhere and pray to the gods he didn’t believe in for warmer weather.
But Luffy wasn’t about to let him do that.
The cold didn’t seem to faze his Captain. Most of the time he didn’t even realize it was cold until someone commented on his ability to withstand the frigid temperatures without a coat. He actually liked the cold, even though his toes almost always came within an inch of getting frost bitten because Luffy refused to wear proper winter shoes until someone beat his face in.
That had all already come to pass, Zoro having been the one to do the deed and hold the man down while Chopper put the shoes on him. And now Zoro was quietly trying to doze in his usual spot beneath the main mast, but being unable to because of the temperature, and also because the rest of the crew were having a damn good time making sculptures out of the snow, and apparently they couldn't do that quietly.
“HOOOO, Nami! What’s that thing out there?” Luffy called to their navigator. “It looks like a giant ice cube!”
“It’s an iceberg, though I’ve never heard of an iceberg being a perfect cube…” Nami replied absent-mindedly while she calculated whether or not they’d have to change course to avoid the potential obstacle.
“Let’s go see it!” Luffy suggested, excited.
“Absolutely not!” Nami said. “It’s too dangerous; it could damage the ship.”
“Franky! That way!” Luffy ordered, pointing in the direction of the iceberg and completely ignoring Nami as if she’d never even spoken.
“What did I just say!?” Nami complained, stomping her foot and gritting her teeth.
“It’ll be fine,” Zoro spoke up. “Even if the ship gets damaged, Franky can fix anything.”
Nami grumbled some more, but eventually had to concede that Zoro was right. “He still shouldn’t be taking unnecessary risks,” she said as she walked away to help Franky navigate through the icy waters.
Silently, Zoro agreed. He was worried. Investigating an iceberg didn’t seem like it’d be too dangerous, but the Straw Hats had a knack for finding trouble in the oddest places, and Zoro had a bad feeling about this little mini-adventure. He knew something was going to happen, but he couldn’t stop it. All he could really do was hope, whatever the incident happened to be, that it was only minor.
The Sunny pulled up alongside the strange iceberg a little ways away and Franky began to let the Mini Merry out, but Luffy’s patience had run out. He rocketed himself from the ship’s railing and went sailing through the air towards the hunk of ice. A few of the crew yelled at him, berating him, but Zoro just watched, on edge. The feeling in his gut was getting thicker.
He relaxed a tiny bit when Luffy landed on the iceberg, but it was short lived. Luffy’s feet touched the ice, but as soon as his whole weight was on them, he began to slide down the face of the cube while the whole thing shook and wobbled in the water. Luffy tried to regain his balance, but he couldn’t find anywhere to grip the smooth surfaces of the ice cube.
There were a few seconds of silence after Luffy fell into the frigid water. And then Chopper and Usopp were screaming for Luffy and yelling for someone to save him.
“It’s your turn, marimo!” Sanji called as he served the two unconcerned girls something warm and steaming in a mug with a spoon in it.
“Shut up! I know! Your skinny ass wouldn’t be able to handle it anyway!” he yelled back while he hurriedly took his coat and gloves and things off as fast as he could, ignoring Sanji's reply. He may not have been a doctor like Chopper, but he knew damn well that cold water was more dangerous than warm. It might kill him long before he drowned. Hopefully Luffy wouldn’t freeze to death before Zoro got to him.
He dove into the water wearing nothing but his pants; clothes wouldn’t keep him warm underwater and would only slow him down. The temperature of the water was paralyzing; he could feel it already sucking away all his strength. It took his breath away, forcing it all out at once in a giant bubble; he had to resurface again for air before going down again to search for Luffy.
The deeper he went the colder it got. He couldn’t even feel his feet and hands anymore and the numbness was rapidly creeping up his limbs, making it harder and harder to move. His eyes were burning from both the cold and the salt, but he could just make out a shadow shaped like Luffy a few yards down. He summoned his remaining strength and swam down painfully slowly and managed to grab Luffy’s right ankle. Turning his face skyward, he went still and let his body rise to the surface on its own.
He, along with an unconscious Luffy, was pulled onto a boat almost as soon as he head broke the surface. Franky, Chopper, and Brook had taken the Mini Merry out to help them, and Zoro was grateful. He wasn’t sure he’d have been able to swim all the way back to the Sunny. As it was, he could barely keep his eyes open. And once he and Luffy were on the boat, he didn’t bother trying anymore.

When he woke he felt feverish. He was in Chopper’s medical ward on a bed, bundled in blankets and with a warm, wet washcloth on his forehead. He untangled one of his arms from the blankets and removed the cloth, groaning as the cool air hit his sweaty brow. He started to push the blankets off him, but Chopper came out of nowhere and swatted his hand away, telling him he wasn’t to get up.
“But I have to pee,” Zoro mumbled. He was still exhausted.
“Hm…you shouldn’t get up…maybe I could put in a Foley?” Chopper mused to himself.
“What’s a Foley?”
“It’s a catheter that you insert through your urethra into the bladder to drain away the urine so bedridden patients don’t have to get up to use the bathroom,” the reindeer answered, still contemplating the idea.
“My urethra…”
“It’s the tube in your-“
“I know what it is!” Zoro cut him off, “And you’re not putting in it either! Now move; I need to pee!”
“But-“
“I’m just going to pee, Chopper. I’ll go right back to bed, I promise.”
Chopper gave him a disapproving look, but moved aside and let him get up.
When he came back from the bathroom, Chopper was gone, and he noticed for the first time that he wasn’t the only patient confined to bed rest. Luffy watched him with lazy eyes and a silly, loose smile on his face. He was shivering slightly and his face was flushed a deep red. Zoro went to him and pressed the back of his fingers to Luffy’s forehead.
“You’re burning up,” he commented, not sure what else to say. Luffy’s eyes seemed to be expecting something of him, but he wasn’t sure what.
His captain reached up to touch his forehead too. He opened his mouth to say something, but all that came out was a hoarse cough that hurt Zoro’s throat from just hearing. Luffy covered his mouth with the edge of a blanket, and when he finally stopped coughing and pulled the blanket away, there was blood on the white material.
“Shit,” Zoro breathed.
“He has pneumonia,” Chopper said quietly from the doorway behind him. “You both do. But his is worse. You slept through most of yours. He keeps coughing though, so he can’t sleep much.”
“Is he going to be okay?”
“Oh, yes,” he said with a reassuring smile. “Pneumonia is very curable, and Luffy’s normally pretty healthy, so he’ll be fine in a few weeks. You will, too.”
Zoro nodded, though he was having hard time believing it, looking at Luffy. He looked half dead.
“If you’re hungry, Sanji made soup. You should eat something.”
“Later,” Zoro said and Chopper left without another word.
Once he was gone, Zoro lifted Luffy’s blankets and climbed into the bed with him. With a smile, Luffy snuggled to him, burying his face in his chest. They were both quiet while Zoro held him and rubbed his back soothingly.
Luffy sighed contentedly and kissed his neck. “Thank you,” he whispered, unable to speak any louder.
Zoro grunted. “You shouldn’t do reckless things,” he admonished.
“Shut up.”
Zoro was shocked. He’d expected Luffy to come back with a light-hearted joke and some assurance that he wouldn’t die that easily. He was about ready to tell Luffy to fuck himself and get out of the bed, but then Luffy traced the angry scar that tore through his torso and scratched it a little. He could feel Luffy frowning against him. He quieted his rage and fell into a melancholy silence.
He really didn’t have any right to scold Luffy for doing stupid things when he did them all the time himself. He’d never realized it before, but Luffy must worry about him just as much as Zoro worried about Luffy. The idiot never showed it, but then again, neither did Zoro.
The swordsman grunted and held Luffy a little tighter.
