Kate entered her cabin, and sat down. She had learned of so much more than she could comprehend...different worlds, daemons...that there was still a possibility that she and Sam would meet again. She closed her eyes, trying to clear her mind, but to no avail.

Lyra sat down next to the older woman, her face apparently blank as she stared fiercly into the alethiometer, a large golden compass with four hands, three knobs, and thirty six symbols on the face.

Glancing up as Kate entered the cabin, she and Pantalaimon turned their attention from the golden compass to her.

"Did you find out where he was?" Lyra asked. "I could probably ask the alethiometer, but I'm not sure if it'll tell me. I tried to ask it how to get back to Oxford, and it told me to talk to a boy witch about flying." That hadn't been entirely honest. What she had asked the alethiometer was how she could go meet Will, but she hadn't lied about what the small device had told her in return.

Lyra shrugged and leaned back, stroking Pantalaimon, who was sitting next to her. "I know it won't lie, at least. And please don't ask me to much about what it is, or how it works. I don't know too much about it myself. All I know is that it as symbol reader, and I'm probably the only one here who knows how to use it."

Kate frowned.

"I can't find him," she said quietly. She bit her lip in disappointment, but tried not to let it show. There was still hope, after all. And it wasn't as though she had looked everywhere that Sam could possibly be. there were several worlds here; odds were that he would be in at least ONE of them. Maybe he was looking for her too.

"Are you hungry?" she asked finally, trying to remember if she had kept anything edible handy.

At the word 'hungry' Lyra's stomach rumbled, and she and her daemon looked up expectantly. "Yeah!" she said, "I haven'thad anything to eat for a while."

Pausing for a moment, she added, "I'm sorry, I'll help you look for him." Pantalaimon's expression mirrored her sympathetic look, and she stood up, Pan walking forward a few steps.

Kate stood up, making her way into her tiny kitchen. She opened her cupboards, and began to pull out the little food she had.

"All right," she said, as she stepped back. She raised her eyebrows, just realizing that it had been a month at the least since she had eaten a godo meal. Recently, the idea of cooking and food had been farther from her mind then anything else.

"I think your safest bet is to go with the bread. At least, until we can acquire some more food." She smiled appologetically.

Lyra nodded. "Thanks," she said, and quickly tore into the loaf of bread. It wasn't to bad- Lyra wasn't picky, and she was famished. Pantalaimon sat next to her- he didn't need to eat, though he could if wanted to, and back in Oxford Lyra would often share a few of her sweets with him, whenever she got any. Now however, Lyra was hungrily tearing into her bread, chewing large mouthfuls and swallowing hungrily. Lyra knew what proper table manners were, but she rarely used them, not unless she was dragged into some sort of formal occasion, and even then, only reluctantly.

Kate turned back to her kitchen, looking for something more to eat.

"I'm sorry, Lyra," she said at last. "I wasn't exactly planning on company."

She thought for a moment, before realizing how her comment had sounded.

"Not that I'm not happy you're here," she said quickly, noting that her social skills weren't all that they had been at one point.

Lyra smiled through a mouthful of chewed bread. She tried to say something, but it came out as "Mmm mmfy mm." Swallowing her current mouthful, she tried again.

"Thanks, I'm happy to. I'll help you find whoever you're looking for."

Kate turned back to the empty cabinets, pretending to be busy looking for something.

"Well, lookin' isn't going to do anything is he's not here," she said, acting as though this meant nothing to her.
