Summary: Yixing has the perfect gift for Yifan on Valentine's Day. At least he thought he did. Until Tao changes his mind about everything even making him question his whole relationship.
Notes: Just hope you like it!
Yixing sat on his bed, hair a mess, still in the grey tank top and black sweat pants he had slept in, he scratched some corrections onto his music sheet as he continued to compose. It was already noon and he hadn’t left his room yet. This would have been normal and perfectly acceptable for him to be doing on a day where they had nothing scheduled, but not today because today was Valentine’s.
There was a knock at his door.
“Xingxing, you in here?” Tao asked before he opened the door without waiting for a reply.
“Wait!” Yixing quickly moved to hide his papers full of music notes. Tao watched his ge frantically stuff all his music sheets under his butt.
“What are you doing?” Tao looked at him amused.
“Oh. It’s just you.” Yixing let out a sigh of relief and pulled the pages out from under him.
“I’m just putting the finishing touches to my Valentine’s gift.” He tried ironing the creases he had made, with his hand.
“Your gift? For Leader? Oh, what did you get him?” Tao looked around the small brunet clearly not getting what he meant.
“Well…its…” Yixing hesitated at first. He felt a little embarrassed saying it out loud.
Especially to Tao who was Yifan’s ex two years prior. Even though Tao seemed perfectly happy for him and Yifan and was dating Sehun now. Yixing still felt awkward sharing personal relationship things with him.
“It’s a song.” He finally said. “I wrote him a song about how much he means to me.” And Yixing could feel his cheeks glow red as Tao’s mouth curled into a smile.
“Oh that’s cute.” He said looking the room over once more. “What else did you get him?”
Yixing stared at Tao questioningly. “What do you mean? That’s it. My song.”
“Oh.” Tao suddenly looked embarrassed. “Oh well that’s…” Yixing watched Tao’s eye’s scan the room searching for what to say next. They finally rested on him “Never mind! Well I got to go. Bye!” He made for the door but Yixing pushed it closed again.
“Wait! What’s wrong with my song? You don’t think he’ll like it?” Yixing watched Tao scratch his head and not make eye contact.
“It’s not that. I’m sure he’ll love it. It’s just…” Tao took a deep breathe. “Ok, look. I dated Fanfan for a year and in all that time I learned one very important thing about him…”
“Which is?”
“The boy likes material gifts.” Tao stated crossing his arms leaning against the door. “He never responded with as much enthusiasm as he did when I bought him a new coat or shirt or hat from his favorite store. If anything is his style, it’s receiving the new trends. He has to keep up to date with all the latest fashions and trust me he’ll love you for it.” Tao nodded feeling he had given some good advice. But Yixing was feeling a little hollow.
“Material gifts? But that’s not really me.” The unicorn looked down at his music sheets. “Shouldn’t my gift come from the heart?”
“With any other person I’d say yes. But this is Yifan. His emotional capacity stretches as far as a worn out rubber band.” Tao noticed Lay’s eyebrow rise in an un-approving way towards how he was speaking about his boyfriend. “I’m just trying to help.”
“Well thanks but that’s what worked for you guys but I know he’ll like my gift.” Lay raised his chin up confidently.
Tao grinned. “Alright, alright. I’m sorry I said anything. I only came in here to ask if you wanted to go shopping with me and the guys later? Since Hunnie is all the way in Korea today I’ll be spending Valentines alone.” The panda made a pouty face which he had mastered very well but did not work on Yixing as well as the others.
“No thanks.” The unicorn said without having to think about it.
“I thought so.” Tao immediately changed his face back. “Alright, well good luck with your gift!” Tao waved leaving now that Yixing wasn’t blocking the door.
Yixing went back to composing but found it a lot harder to concentrate as his mind was elsewhere. He was so sure before about his song, but now. He thought of Yifan’s reaction, pulling a fake smile while secretly wishing he had a nice hat or shoes. What if his boyfriend really did expect an extravagant gift like he did in the past with Tao? The more Yixing thought about it the more he felt his gift would never measure up.
He hated feeling like he was in competition with Tao but in some ways he was. He remembered Tao and Yifan always laughing and staying out all night partying. Did Yifan have as much fun with Yixing? They did laugh together a lot but Yixing wasn’t as outgoing as Tao. He preferred star gazing and talking while lying on the living room floor at night over going to parties and shopping. What if Yifan was bored of Yixing and this gift was just another remind of how boring he really was? Yixing fell back on his bed. He felt so small and insignificant. And for the first time in the six months he and Yifan had been dating he feared he might lose him.
“Xing, you in here?” The second person to ask that walked in. The unicorn didn’t budge from his spot staring into space. His best friend Luhan sat next to him on the bed peering over him so he was blocking his view of the ceiling. “What’s gotten into you, Xing?”
“I have to get Yifan a better gift.” Yixing suddenly sat up almost hitting Luhan in the face before he moved out of the way.
“What do you mean? What happened with your song?” Luhan looked at the music pages scattered everywhere.
“That was a dumb idea.” Yixing shook his head then looked hopefully at Luhan. “Will you help me pick something out for Yifan?”
“Now?” Luhan’s eye’s widened.
“Lay-shii!” Yifan’s voice came from the kitchen and Yixing’s head quickly turned.
“Come on!” He jumped off the bed grabbing Luhan’s wrist and dragging him out the room with him.
Yixing ran up to Yifan while pulling Luhan behind him. “What’s up?” He smiled.
Yifan looked curiously from Yixing to Luhan. “Where have you been?”
“In my room. Why?” He asked casually.
“Uh, it’s Valentine’s Day.” Yifan continued to stare at Yixing’s hand clinging tightly to Luhan’s wrist. “I finished all my promotional work. Didn’t you want to do something together? You know, with me?”
“Yes.” Yixing nodded. “But first me and Luhan have to go out.”
“What?” Yifan and Luhan said together.
“Why exactly?” Their leader was now staring at Luhan.
“Candy.” Yxing stated simply. “He want’s candy and so do I so we’re going to go get some. We’ll be back soon.” He began ushering Luhan to the front door while Luhan mouthed a wordless protest. Yifan watched them go jaw hung open and eye’s wide, unsure what had just happened.
“Hey, can I come?” He yelled after them but the door had already slammed shut.
-
“Funny I don’t think we’re going to find much candy in Footaction’s.” Luhan mocked as they walked around the shoe store at the Mall.
“We’re not buying candy. We’re looking for a gift for Yifan. You think he’ll like this style?” Yixing asked holding up a spotted green and black Air Jordan sneaker.
“I don’t know, probably.” Luhan was still sulking having been brought against his will and now knowing he wasn’t even getting candy. “What happened with your song? You get writers block or something?”
“No.” Yixing put the shoe back and stared at the floor. “I just think this will be better. That’s all.”
“Hm.” Luhan didn’t believe him but decided not to question his friend any further.
“He probably has all these shoes already. Let’s try Pigalle.” Yixing walked quickly out the store bowing to the clerks as he left.
“Yeah because he doesn’t have enough of that brand.” Luhan said under his breath as he followed Yixing out the doors.
They had only been shopping in Pigalle for a few minutes when Yixing heard a familiar squeal much like a baby panda.
“ They finally have it!” Yixing turned to see Yifan and Tao only a few meters away and for the first time Yixing was grateful he was short and hid behind a family of mannequins.
“Get down.” Yixing pulled Luhan with him behind the mannequin display. “Why are they here?” Yixing whispered then he remembered Tao’s invite to go shopping.
“I’m going to get two.” he heard Tao say. “One for Sehunnie. I think he’ll like grey best.”
“Fine.” Fanfan’s husky voice answered. “Can we go? Xing might be home already.”
“If you didn’t want to shop, why’d you come out with me?” Tao asked going through the coat rack. Yixing was a little curious too feeling a hint of jealousy.
“Well no one else wanted to come. I didn't think you should go alone. Plus Lay-shii left with Lulu.” Yifan trailed off. “I don’t know…I guess I just didn’t want to be sitting at home waiting for him like a lonely puppy.”
Yixing felt a little guilty for leaving his boyfriend feeling lonely on Valentine’s Day. He suddenly noticed Luhan shaking his head disappointedly in his direction. “I know.” Yixing whispered rolling his eyes and hitting his friend on the arm for good measure.
“Ow.” Luhan accidently said a little too loudly.
“Did you hear that?” Yifan’s said and Yixing clapped his hand over Luhan’s mouth.
“What?” Tao looked around.
“One of the mannequins said ‘ow’.” Yifan pointed to the display Luhan and Yixing were hiding behind.
“That’s not funny.” Tao said paying for his coats and glancing nervously at the dummies.
“For real. What if…” Yifan’s eyes grew wide staring at Tao. “They’re alive!”
“Shut up!” Tao slapped his arm. “I’m getting out of here! Let’s go home!”
Yifan laughed. “Finally.” He looked back once more at the mannequins, shrugged then followed Tao out.
As soon as they were gone Yixing and Luhan popped up from hiding. “We have to beat them home.” Yixing said looking at the shelf and grabbing the first nice watch he saw.
“Why?” Luhan asked rubbing his cafes that were asleep from kneeling too long.
“Because I don’t want Fanfan waiting on me anymore. I’ve wasted enough time with this.” He said taking the watch to the counter and paying for it.
“We should probably stop by the candy store first. You know? To fit with our story.” Luhan suggested leaning against the counter.
“Good idea.” Yixing agreed.
Lucky for Yixing, Luhan drives like a mad man and they made it home just before Wu Fan and Tao pulled in.
“You’re back!” Yixing smiled running to the leader as he walked in the front door.
“You too.” Yifan said back without much enthusiasm.
“Happy Valentine’s day!” Yixing smiled hugging Yifan around the waist. His boyfriend stared down at him then rolled his eyes.
“Oh, do I get to spend some time with you now?” He asked looking put out.
“Sorry I left, I know I shouldn’t of. Forgive me, Leader?” He pouted sticking his bottom lip out and Yifan couldn’t resist his cuteness. He finally grabbed Yiixng around the waist and hugged him back. “You’re too good at that, you know that?” he sighed and Yixing snickered.
“Find anything good at the mall?” Yixing asked snug against Yifan.
“How’d you know I was at the mall?” Yifan looked down at his brunet hair. Yixing’s eyes grew wide.
“Uh…Tao!” He said instantly. “Tao said he wanted to go this morning, I just assumed that’s where you were.”
“Oh, yeah we were. Wish I was with you though.” Yifan stroked Yixing’s cheek, cupping the younger one’s face while Yiixng tippy toed to meet his lips.
“Me too.” Yixing grinned as his boyfriend continued kissing his forehead, nose and cheeks.
“Come on, I want to give you your gift.” He took Yifan’s giant hand in his and led him to the roof.
-
“Couldn’t we do this somewhere warmer?” Yifan said rubbing his arms as they sat in 40 degree weather on the flat top of the dorm in sweat jackets.
“It’s pretty up here. Plus it’s not that cold.” Yixing actually loved the cold. “Besides it gives us an excuse to cuddle.” Lay leaned close to Yifan.
“Oh so this was your plan all along.” Yifan gasped. “To get me alone and take advantage of me.” He suddenly covered his chest as if he was naked.
Yixing laughed. “I don’t think I’d have to go this far to have my way with you.”
“True.” Yifan grinned and put his arm around Yixing. “You want my gift first?” He asked.
“Sure.” Yixing smiled.
Yifan pulled a card out from his pocket and handed it to Yixing. “Happy Valentine’s day.” He kissed Yixing’s cheek.
Yixing looked at the card which had drawings scribbled all over it. The front had two little figures which Yixing assumed were him and Yifan holding hands with hearts around them and above their heads in englsih was written “Happy Valentine’s day from the best you’ll ever get!” Yixing smirked and looked sideways at Yifan who nodded approvingly. Yixing opened the card and inside on one side it had the same figures near a lake with ducks and watching a sunset and some creatures maybe a unicorn and dragon that had words written inside them saying “be mine” and “I luv u”.
Yixing was in awe. He imagined Yifan taking his time putting effort into every drawing but still having it come out like it was from a five year old and he couldn’t stop grinning. “Oh my god, this card is the best!”
“Right?” Yifan smiled proudly.
Yixing read the other half of the card which was nothing but words.
“Yixing, how do I describe how much you mean to me? You make me feel whole when I use to feel hollow. You’re the most beautiful person inside and out. You accept every part of me, good and bad. I feel like a better person because of you and I’ll never let you go. Forever and always - Yifan”
Yixing stared at the page with a small smile on his face. Yifan was hiding his with his hands red with embarrassment. He peeked out between fingers to catch Yixing’s expression. “What? Too cheesy?” he asked.
“It’s the best.” Yixing said back and Yifan hugged him, squishing him tight.
“Ah, wait!” Yixing exclaimed pulling away a little from Yifan. He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a small pink box. “You’ll squash you’re present.” He put it in Yifan’s big hand.
“Nice color.” Yifan examined the box before opening it. Yixing watched him eagerly.
“Wow.” Yifan exclaimed pulling the watch from the box but to Yixing’s disappointment he didn’t sound as excited as he would have hoped.
“Do you like it?” Yixing asked nervously.
“Yeah.” Wu Fan blinked a few times. “I had no idea you would get me something like this. I kind of feel like I should have gotten you more.” He glanced at the card in Yixing’s lap.
“No.” Yixing put the card to his chest. “This is perfect.”
“I guess.” Yifan said rubbing his thumb against the glass surface of his watch.
Yixing felt guilt in his stomach. He really did love Yifan’s card and he wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Yifan’s gift had heart and feeling, unlike Yixing’s gift.
“Actually, I should be the one disappointed in my gift.” Yixing said bowing his head down.
“Why?” Yifan looked at him confused.
“You put a lot of thought and care into your gift. I just bought that today. I didn’t even think about if it suited you or if you’d really like it.” Yixing wouldn’t look at Yifan.
“You bought this today? At Pigal -“ Yifan’s eye’s suddenly got wide and shot down at Yixing. “You’re the shouting mannequin!”
“That was actually Luhan.” Yixing said still looking ashamed and now embarrassed. Yifan only laughed.
“Wow,” He shook his head. “You always surprise me, but you know I had a feeling about this gift. It just isn’t you.”
“I know.” Yixing sighed.
“So then why -?”
“I got the idea somewhere…that you only like material things.” Yixing said under his breath.
“What? From who?”
Yixing bit his lip and looked away.
“From Tao?” Yifan asked, Yixing turned towards him and he had a slight amused grin on his face. “I suppose he has a right to think that.”
“Well you two did buy each other gifts a lot. Expensive gifts” Yixing pointed out.
“That was different.” Yifan huffed, a twinge of annoyance in his voice. “Me and Tao, all we ever did was have fun. Not like me and you.”
“Oh well thanks.” Yixing scoffed.
“No.” Yifan corrected himself. “What I mean is we never talked. We never got to know each other in a deeper way. You and I have fun but we have more than that too. I can be angry around you and you’ll listen. I can be sad or just tired and I you’ll understand and support me. You get me and I feel like I get you. Well…I feel like I get you most of the time…” He held up the little box and smirked. Yixing smiled too. He felt stupid for questioning Yifan’s feelings for him or that they would change so suddenly because of a gift. Yifan wouldn’t be with Yixing if he didn’t want to be and if it wasn’t meant to be.
Yixing put his arms around Yifan’s neck and hugged him and was met with warm arms around his waist, before Yifan’s lips met his.
“Now that we understand each other can you understand that I’m freezing?” Yifan said chattering his teeth mockingly.
“Ok, let’s go inside.” Yixing laughed jumping up first and helping Yifan stand. “I actually have something I want to show you.” He took Yifan’s hand and pulled him back indoors.
“More watches?” Yifan asked and was met with a fist to his arm.
-
Yifan sat on a cushion on the floor with a cup of warm coffee, looking up at Yixing tuning his guitar sitting on his bed.
“I didn’t finish it…so it’s not the best.” Yixing said timidly. Yifan closed his eyes and nodded like he understood. So Yixing strummed G.
“I wasn’t always this happy, nothing ever went right.
I always felt dim like I wasn’t meant for the light.
You came crashing in like thunder in the night,
My heart wasn’t prepared
it was more then I knew,
this love that I found when I met you.
Because you shine so…briiiiiight..so bright.”
Yifan watched with his mouth hanging open in a stupid smile. Eye’s going back and forth from Yixing’s face to his hands strumming. Yixing would meet his glance every now and then and grin back.
“I thought I’d never see day again,
I thought good things will always come to an end.But you stay by my side,
My love and my friend.
And you shine so briiiiight, so bright.”
Yixing put his guitar down and smiled at the floor bashfully, ears pink.
Yifan stared at him mouth hanging open still. “THAT’S not finished?! That’s the greatest song I’ve ever heard. I need that as my ring tone, and my alarm clock and my life’s theme music!” Yifan tackled Yixing onto the bed wrapping his arms around his neck in a mock threating way. “I can’t believe you were going to keep that from me!”
“So did you like it?” Yixing laughed.
Yifan finally released his grip, letting his arms fall back on the bed looking up at Yixing who was now laid on top of him, he let out a satisfied sigh. “It’s defiantly my style.”
Yixing felt warmth and happiness overwhelm him as he laid with his love, on the very best Valentine’s Day ever.
-The End-
