Summary: Yifan really likes Yixing, and he really can't think of a better way to become his Valentine than being his secret admirer. Chanyeol doesn't think Yifan could be any stupider.
Notes: This fic was fun to write, I hope everyone enjoys it~ Also, I live for dorky Yifan.
It’s only January but Yifan has come up with a, seemingly, foolproof plan to get Yixing to be his Valentine. He had to become his secret admirer.
Step one, love letters.
Yixing has always been a friend, someone that was cemented in to their friend group since elementary. On the other hand, Yifan has had a crush on Yixing since he towered over him as a lanky and awkward freshman. He’s still lanky and awkward, but at least he’s a senior now. With age comes experience, he’s been told. But he supposes he shouldn’t be taking lifelong advice from Jongdae when he’s talking about the amount of food he can inhale at the all you can eat buffet.
Still, he likes everything Yixing is about. From the way he likes to spam cute emoticons in their group Kakaotalk chatroom to how he can outsass (was that a word? Yifan didn’t care) even Sehun on a good day. Yixing is a good person, from the core, and Yifan supposes he’s liked him ever since Yixing made sure everyone came to cheer for Yifan during his first basketball game during their freshman year.
Chanyeol usually comes over after school on Fridays and this time Yifan is determined to get his help in writing some poems and love notes. Yifan taps his pen against his lips as he tries to think of non-cliché things to write about the wonder that was Zhang Yixing. Chanyeol is laughing when he’s brought out of his daze and he frowns in his direction.
“What, I can’t be in love?” Chanyeol simultaneously throws a pillow at his face and stuffs his own with chips. Gross.
“Shut up, you’re like twelve and haven’t even started dating him,” Chaneol whines. Yifan wrinkles his nose, too annoyed from the pillow throwing and the truth of Chanyeol’s words to refute. The crumbs around Chanyeol’s mouth are annoying too.
“That makes you eleven, then. God, wipe your mouth before the crumbs get on my bed,” Yifan tosses the pillow on his bed and turns back to the poem. From the corner of his eye he can see Chanyeol shrug and continue to shovel more chips in his mouth.
“Hey, what’s a synonym for ‘caring’ that rhymes with ethereal?”
Apparently pillows hurt more when they’re thrown in your face a second time, Yifan finds out.
Step two, deliver said love letters.
Yifan is sneaking around the school a half hour before the first bell rings to see if Yixing is anywhere near his locker. The letter is tucked discreetly in between the pages of his calculus book and he bites his lip in anticipation.
“Sehun!” Yifan really shouldn’t be hiding behind a trashcan, considering he’s the size of a jolly green giant, but Sehun pretends that he can’t see him anyways, “C’mon, I’ll buy you lunch tomorrow if you help me!” This perks Sehun’s interest and the sophomore joins Yifan in crouching behind the trashcan.
“I need you to keep a lookout for Yixing,” Yifan has his most concentrated expression on and for a moment he wonders if the queasiness in his stomach is constipation.
“Why?” Sehun grins and Yifan considers punching him in the face. Prioritize, Wu, romance is on the line.
“I have to stick something,” Sehun wiggles his eyebrows and Yifan decides he hates sophomores, “in his locker, so just keep an eye open and yell out or something if he’s coming.” Sehun’s laughter fades out to an ‘aye, aye captain’ and Yifan peeks over the trashcan to check if the coast is clear.
Seeing that no one was near Yixing’s locker, especially none of his friends, Yifan pulls the letter out from his book and prances over to slip it in through the metal slats. He makes a mental note to ask Han or Junmyeon for Yixing’s locker combination later. It would make the entire process a lot less suspicious to passing students, Yifan figures.
His grin is almost too big on his face as he waltzes back to Sehun and the sophomore pops a stick of gum in his mouth. The look of his face is all too mocking and Yifan really, really hates sophomores.
“No Yixing in site?” Yifan glances around and is happy to see that Sehun didn’t fail at the easiest job in the world.
“Nope,” The younger pops his ‘p’ before running ahead to catch up with Zitao and Jongin.
Yifan fist pumps the air to celebrate his victory on his way to his own locker and almost falls over when he sees Yixing and Baekhyun a couple of feet away. Luckily Yixing’s attention was on his phone and the occasional glance at Baekhyun. Baekhyun, however, is nothing short of smug, as if he knows why Yifan’s celebrating, and Yifan reminds himself as waves and makes his escape to kick Chanyeol’s ass.
Step three, evaluate.
Yifan doesn’t see Yixing again until lunch. The group is spread out in the courtyard in their usual spot and Chanyeol has to remind Yifan to stop looking like he had to use the restroom. Jongdae is wiggling his eyebrows this time and Yifan doesn’t hesitate to glare at Chanyeol. Chanyeol is shameless as he bounds over to plop next to Kyungsoo. Yifan casually slides in the open space between Yixing and Han. He also casually drops his water bottle on his foot while trying to sit down but no one’s fazed by it anymore.
“So, about that letter,” Yifan almost chokes on his sandwich and his gaze shoots up to Minseok who’s actually not grinning like he’s plotting Yifan’s demise. Unlike Chanyeol to his right.
“Oh!” He dares to turn his attention to Yixing, who isn’t even looking at him, “Yeah, it’s a secret admirer letter. It’s really cute, I wonder who it is…” Yixing trails off to continue his lunch and the others snicker. Yifan lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding and returns to his lunch as well.
Crisis avoided.
(“Maybe you should just ask him out like a normal person,” Jongdae laughs and Yifan has to count to fifty to keep himself from punching him.)
Yifan doesn’t see Yixing again until his last class of the day. He sits a few desks away from Yixing with Chanyeol, but Jongdae motions them over during their free time. Yixing’s smile is sweet and Yifan’s heart clenches, his face heating up, as he sits across from him.
Chanyeol and Jongdae are already too lost in a conversation of their own and suddenly Yifan feels very small. Yixing is looking for something in his backpack and Yifan wonders if he should say something, anything. His thoughts are interrupted as Yixing presents a- his letter.
“Could you help me? I don’t recognize the writing, so maybe you will?” Yifan laughs nervously but grabs the letter anyways. His writing is definitely recognizable, but he manages to fake contemplation enough to pass by Yixing.
“Sorry, doesn’t ring a bell,” Yifan said. Yixing grabbed the letter back and carefully tucked it in the plastic cover of his binder with a smile. Yifan knows that his identity is still unknown but it makes him happy to see Yixing taking care of the letter.
“I hope they reveal themselves soon, the letter was nice. It made me feel good about myself,” Yixing is laughing, covering his mouth, and Yifan can’t help but laugh back, anxiety slowly trickling out of him.
Step four, small gifts.
After a week and a half of clumsy spy missions and bribing sophomores, Yifan decides to move on to the next step of his plan. He knows that Yixing likes small, cute gifts and his thin student wallet was thanking whoever was up in the sky for that.
He remembers being invited to Yixing’s birthday party during their sophomore year. He likes to believe it’s because Yixing likes his company but Chanyeol likes to remind him that their entire friend group was invited too.
Yixing had birthday parties before, of course, but usually Yifan just got him gift cards to food places like he did for everyone else. He figured that it would probably be a good idea to get Yixing something a little more personal that year. Yifan had spent the better part of an entire afternoon trying to figure out what he should get for Yixing’s present. He didn’t want to show off, but he also didn’t want to seem like he didn’t care. Was he trying too hard?
“You’re trying too hard,” Chanyeol had laughed in his ear and Yifan shoved the freshman off his bed.
He ended up buying Yixing two scarves from a fashion boutique Zitao recommended to him. One was a pale yellow and the other was a navy, both thick knitted and soft to the touch. The birthday party was really just a dinner with their friend group, and Yifan had spent the entire time worrying over how Yixing would react to his present.
It turned out that Yixing loved his present. He had looped the navy infinity scarf around his neck and hugged Yifan (Chanyeol secretly got a picture of the hug and Yifan definitely didn’t have it saved on his phone, of course not…) while thanking him for the cute present.
Yifan sent Sehun on Yixing watch as he shoved the small wrapped present in Yixing’s locker. He was really glad he managed to get Junmyeon to tell him Yixing’s locker combination because there was no way he could have fit the box in through the metal slats. Not that he tried or anything.
Yifan smiles as he passed Yixing on the way to his first period, and almost dies when it is returned. He really hopes that his plan is going to work because each and every day he finds himself more enraptured with Yixing.
(“You’re like prepubescent,” Chanyeol laughs.)
Step five, repeat step three.
When he sees the fluffy sheep phone charm attached to Yixing’s phone during lunch he almost passes out from excitement. Chanyeol is sending him a look that can only mean ‘you’re gross’ but Yifan is too happy to indulge him.
“Is that from your secret admirer?” Yifan asks, trying to be casual even though Zitao is coughing to hide a laugh across from him. Jongin shoots him a pitying look as he clamps a hand around Zitao’s mouth.
“Yeah,” Yixing smiles, as if oblivious to the sophomores’ antics, “There wasn’t a note or anything, though. They’re being really mysterious.”
Yifan mentally pats himself on the back. He really wanted to keep the whole ‘mysterious’ factor up until he confessed to Yixing. That would probably be more romantic anyways.
(“Really, you’re not romantic at all,” Kyungsoo pats his head and Yifan hates all of his friends.)
Yifan spends the better part of a week leaving small gifts (phone charms, candy, etc) in Yixing’s locker. Every other day he sees Yixing using the gifts and he feels almost proud. After all, it would suck if Yixing didn’t even bother using the presents.
Chanyeol can suck it.
Step six, confess.
Yifan decided that he would confess a week from Valentine’s. He really didn’t want to put any pressure on Yixing on the actual day since that would kind of be a stupid move.
(“You’re his secret admirer, the entire thing is a stupid move.” Chanyeol groans.)
He left a note, the final note, in Yixing’s locker telling him to meet him near the gym during lunch. Yifan knew no one ate near the gym, choosing to stick near the cafeteria or the grassy areas, and he wanted no one to be around to see his confession. After all, it’d suck to be potentially rejected in front of a crowd.
Rejection was something that often ran through his head, but he knew that Yixing wouldn’t quit being his friend after it. The thought comforted him, but he was more determined to win Yixing’s heart.
Chanyeol clapped him on the back as Yifan rushed to his locker to grab a daisy he planned to give Yixing. It was stupid; a small flower that held no real significance, but Yifan didn’t want to go empty handed.
By the time he reached the gym, his heart was racing and he swore his ears were cherry red. Yixing was leaning against the gym doors, looking the definition of perfect with a small smile of his face. Yifan felt his blood heat up with every step he took and before he knew it he was standing in front of Yixing, holding out the daisy.
Yixing bit his lip as he grabbed the flower out of his hands and Yifan cleared his throat.
“So, I, um- I’m you’re secret admirer,” Yifan really loved being so eloquent.
“It’s about time you owned up to it,” Yifan felt his heart squeeze at the grin on Yixing’s face and he tried to wrap his brain around what was happening.
“Wait- you knew it was me?” Yifan is all shades of shocked and Yixing giggles while lacing their fingers together.
“From the first day,” Yifan looks horrified and Yixing reached up to smooth out his brow. “I was around the corner. You didn’t do a very good job of checking your surroundings and Sehun isn’t exactly a good look out. We’ve also been friends for a long time, I kind of know your writing.”
Yifan nods, still very embarrassed, and his mind wanders back to all the times he’s hidden small gifts and notes in Yixing’s locker. He could have sworn that Sehun was a great look out, but sophomores aren’t typically trustworthy anyways. He should have known better. Looking back on it, even Chanyeol would have been a better look out. If Yifan’s being true to himself, he’s more bitter over all the lunch money he’s wasted.
“Wait, why didn’t you tell me you knew?” Yifan said and Yixing giggles, waggling his phone with the few phone charms Yifan had given him.
“You’re methods of ‘courting’ were cute. I liked the attention; I wasn’t lying when I said it made me feel good.”
“So, um,” Yifan smiles faintly and squeezes Yixing’s hand, “Does this mean you’ll be my Valentine?”
Yixing doesn’t give him an answer. Instead, he reaches up and plants a kiss on Yifan’s cheek. Yifan is still sputtering when Yixing releases their hands and scampers off at the sound of the bell with a cute wave.
During his last period Yifan will walk in and see Yixing sitting on his desk, feet dangling over the side as he talks animatedly to Jongdae and Chanyeol. At the site of Yifan, Chanyeol starts to make obnoxious sounds and hearts with his hands until Yifan has to physically restrain him. His face is heated but he can’t even bring himself to care when Yixing holds his hand out with a teasing smile.
He nearly trips over himself trying to take it, but at the end of the day when Yixing is hugging him goodbye he supposes it’s okay.
