Last night was the opening for the new art show at Vera
"Ground Breaking: A Silent Auction" presented by Broken Ground. A benefit for SHARE/WHEEL (tent city project) Mar 3 - Mar 31
Everything went so smooth for this show. I initially only talked to Ryan (Broken Ground) in late January and somehow we pulled off everything in just a month. We got the press release out early. We had posters at least a week ahead. We got listed in the Seattle Weekly. The snaffu with painting over the graffiti in the gallery worked out (thank you oil based shellac primer). Hanging was a cinch and we only had to deal with one or two whinny artists (these lights suck). The opening was phenomenal. The biggest one that the gallery committee has had since being an official committee. Lots of different people, business types, family of the artists, friends, students, random people from the community, Vera people, it was great. I saw tons of people from school and I do regret not asking what they were doing later. The speeches were nice. I thought it was good to have the people from SHARE talk, it emphasized that the show was for a good cause. Ben is a good DJ too, and he played Blondie for me.
It was agreed that the artwork was only so-so and I thought the artists were a little out of their minds setting the minimum bids at a couple hundred dollars. The photography looked very amateur. Nothing was outstanding. They did get a few bids, mostly on the things with minimums under $100. I know the money is going to a good cause but people are just not going to buy crap because the money goes to a good cause. They want something in return, otherwise they would just donate the money in the first place. "That makes me feel better about my work" was the quote of the night.
So much to do so little time, seems to be my motto lately.
I am going to walk over to the local espresso place and see about getting myself a show. They do little small art shows there and they always seem to sell well. I have a Georgetown series in mind. I already have the shots and I am going to do Polaroid transfers and maybe some emulsion lifts. I just need to get some frames. I need to save money for Prague because I am definitely going no matter they say.
