he didn't hope that the owner of the restaurant would constantly flirt with him.
much to his relief, and a sliver of dismay, he gets all of the above.

during his second week, when he's working a shift as the maître d', a man in an expensive-looking black suit wearing a handcuffs-and-star necklace walks through the front door, and david thinks, oh, why hello there, and then, how could someone who looks like that possibly be having lunch alone?
I LOVED THIS DESCRIPTION. THE NECKLACE IS ONE OF MY FAAAAAAAAAVS AND I JUST LOVE THIS MENTAL IMAGE.
just as david's about to turn around, the man reaches out his hand. "i'm david cook, by the way. owner of this - splendid franchise." he sort of laughs and rolls his eyes. "you must be new -- i haven't seen you before."
OMG. I LOVE HOW HE'S ALL HANDSY TOO. OH COOK. PERSONAL SPACE DOESN'T HOLD YOU DOWN.
"how's your thursday been so far?" david asks cook casually a few weeks later.
"magnificent, now that you're here." cook grins, wide and cheeky, and david swallows.
WHAT. A. NERD. GOD. I WOULD LOVE TO READ COOK'S PERSPECTIVE OF THIS. I FEEL LIKE HE'S SHOOTING ALL THESE RIDICULOUSITIES ONLY BECAUSE HE'S ALSO ~NERVOUS AND EQUALLY AS AWKWARD AS ARCHIE EXCEPT HE HAS A BETTER WAY OF DISGUISING IT. THE DORKINESS IS SO HILARIOUS.
cook nods a couple times, and it - it almost looks like he's trying to save that piece of information, tuck it into a corner of his mind, to use at a later date, but ---
david really needs to stop thinking like this.

but then cook pins him with this gaze and adds, "then again, nothing quite tastes as good as you look today."
david just kind of stares for a minute, throat working and mouth opening and closing, before he resigns to a helpless, "um ---- right."
OH GOD. THE GAZE. I KNOW OF THIS GAZE. WELL. NOT PERSONALLY. BUT I HAVE SEEN THESE PICTURES. OF THE GAZE. D: AND LOLZ AT ARCHIE BEING ALL '....COUGH'.
"are you on the menu?" cook says, stalking toward him, slipping his free hand into his pocket and grinning.
david stares at him.
"because i would love a slice of you," cook finishes. he leans against the counter next to david and raises his eyebrows.
I AM LOLZING SO HARD RIGHT NOW OMG.
"well, um," david says, gathering up some courage and the next order, "i'm, uh - i'm pretty sure you couldn't afford me?"
A;LSKDJF;ALJFALF. A;LSKFDJ;ALJDF. OH ARCHIE. OH. ARCHIE. THIS COMEBACK. A+ MATERIAL ARCHIE. A+++ FOR YOU.
(except that's all a lie, he totally wants cook to still be there.)

"are you pricy?" cook's grinning at him, a playful light in his eyes, and david blushes under his gaze.
"oh my gosh, are you going to say lame pickup lines for the rest of forever?" david says.
ARCHIE SPOKE THE WORDS, I HAVE BEEN THINKING. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHAHA. OH COOK. YOU NEED TO GIVE IT UP APPARENTLY.
"hey, could you please pass me a straw - and your number?"
so david hands him a straw, and writes his phone number in big, thick, scrawling handwriting across cook's jawline. cook looks at him, scandalized.
david grins victoriously. "revenge is a dish best served cold," he says sincerely, and cook slaps a hand over his eyes and laughs.
