A nurse tells me about
an elderly couple who,
after learning of his Alzheimer’s,
planned their double suicide. They decided
on one bullet - they would stand head
to head. He would shoot her
and the bullet would continue through,
killing them both.
When the man pulled the trigger, his wife
crumpled against him and he stood
still waiting for the bullet. And he did not
fire the gun again, but called for help, begged
his wife to live. When attempts to revive her
failed, all he would do was curse her
for not sharing as if it were a certain section
of the newspaper, maybe the last piece of pound cake.
