Now it's time for a quick lesson in Cameron's world!
First off: the planet does not have a generally accepted name. While various peoples from the planet call it different things, it is basically referred to as "the World" or some variation therefore of all the time. Part of the reason for this is that astronomy is a dud field for the people on this world (partially for reasons detailed below) and because of this the existence of other worlds are, at best, theoretical. They are certainly not thought of in the physical planetary existence that ours are thought of in.
Next, it is worth noting that there are dozens of dozens of species on this world, but the sentient ones (most of which look very close to humans within minor differences) do think of themselves as different species so much as different "tribes" or "clans" or things like that. As a rule of thumb, clans/tribes are relatively isolated from each other, and it's only in modern times, through the construction of major cities (which are multi-tribe or tribe-neutral for the most part), the assimilation of some peoples, and the onset of major universities like the one Cameron attends which have caused the various beings to come in consistently close contact with each other.
In reality, this cross-cultural exchange on a grand scale has only happened in the last hundred or so years and it is still by no means perfect. Even with the cities and the universities, most peoples prefer to stay in their traditional lands, and even those that leave them rarely leave regions. The regions of the world only have basic contact with each other: the equivalent of a telegraph is, after all, a very modern invention. Though the exchange of stories and to some extent data has been going on for decades, Cameron's world has only just started to enter an age in which true global affairs might exist.
But this is all preface. The details are what follows, divided into various sections:
The Cosmos
There are two simple faces about the sky of the the World which stand out as unique as compared to other ones, and several more subtle changes based on this. The two big ones are that during the day time, as opposed to being blue, the sky is in fact red, and the second is that the world Cameron is from has no moon orbiting it. The lack of moon means that the nights should be much darker, but there is a second more subtle change in that much of the stars are in different positions and, for the most part, brighter than the ones we know from Earth. This, coupled with the redish hue of the daytime sky, means that the nights tend to be bathed in sort of purplish glow that people foreign to the world might find to be surrealist. The sun, apart of being in a red sky, is much the same as on our world. The sunsets even have the same colors, albeit the red part of it means that for a moment or three every sunset, the sky almost seems monochrome red.
Despite there not being a moon and there not being any knowledge of planets other than their own (in fact, the heliocentric theory is only just being pioneered on hir world), there is a long-standing mythology about the "Old World." Supposedly, before the current World there was an Old World on which all of the current tribes and clans lived in relative posterity, until one giant, enemy tribe forced all of them from their ancestral lands. Leaving the Old World behind, they found this "new" World and made their homes here. The myth is prevalent in some form all over the World and in many clans, but widely is thought of as more of a story than the truth of the matter.
Leylines
Leylines represent the basis of almost everything in Cameron's World. Leylines are the veins and arteries of the world, which support the flow of energy through and throughout it. It's the basis of magic and life, as well as by and large controlling natural phenomenon such as the tides (the flow of energy along the leylines under the sea causes a shift in the upper level water, which produces the tides) or even to some extent wind currents or earthquakes which can occur in places where the flow becomes choked and over-saturated too quickly.
In places where the flow gets lessened or cut off, it's harder for things to life; for example the flow to the areas directly around the polar jungles are starved for energy, resulting in a desert. Instead, what energy should go to them is diverted into the nexus on both poles, resulting in them being tropical jungles. Similarly, most parts of the ocean have healthy, solid flows, but those places where the flow is choked will over have large amounts of vegetation becoming wholly overgrown only miles from a place almost devoid of sea life.
The leylines are invisible to the naked eye and run deep within the earth. Most knowledge of them is somewhere between practical and theoretical: the effects of the leylines are obvious, but the full nature of them is entirely unclear to scientists. Think of it like gravity or magnetism, that sort of thing.
Geography
There are tow mega-continents on Cameron's world and two other, smaller ones as well as numerous islands of various sizes in the midst of the great ocean that stands between the two. Both mega-continents are structured somewhat like Antarctica in that they are centered around the poles of hir World. Unlike Antarctica, in Cameron's World the polar caps are giant tropical rainforests. As mentioned above, leyline energy most likely meant to feed the areas around them divert into the poles, resulting in them being "over" abundant. What this also means is that in a ring around the rainforests of the poles are hot, sandy deserts divided only by a few mountain ranges.
The rest of both mega-continents are more conventional in their weather: for the most part they are seasonal, with the climates becoming warmer the closer to the poles you get and cooler the further away and closer to the sea you get. The sea itself is the sort of brisk climate one might expect out of the north Atlantic on the coasts of the mega-continents, though it does warm up in some spots near the equator and the smaller continents in the midst of it. A "frozen tundra" or the sort of climate we would think of as arctic does not exist in Cameron's World. The only places anywhere close to that are certain mountain ranges in which altitude and the chilly climate of the near-coastal areas results in them snowing nearly year-round. Similarly, the only "tropical" climates which are non-seasonal at all on the opposite (warm) end at the poles and the surrounding deserts.
Sunlight is relatively evenly distributed year-round for the World. There are no regions in which there are the extremely long days or nights that one might expect near the poles in our world, and even when it comes to seasonal changes, the days and the nights do not shorten or lengthen nearly to the same extent that our own world does. The only curious thing about sunlight is that there are (unsubstantiated as of year) rumors from sailors that claim during certain times of the year near the equator one can sometimes see two suns in the sky. Because there are few if any villages that rest on the equator in this world (and little habitable land on it besides) the only ones making such claims are often though of as being unreliable sea dogs.
I WILL EDIT IN A ROUGH WORLD MAP FOR HIR WORLD SOON ENOUGH AND IT WILL GO HERE. A a footnote, Cameron's region is on the middle part of the southern mega-continent.
Peoples
As noted earlier, the world Cameron is from is filled with all types of different beings. Most of these beings are the type of things one might expect to find in a fantasy series: while they don't call themselves as such, things akin to trolls, dragons, orcs, elves, and all sorts of other such beings as well as more oddly specific ones (nymphs, ice fairies) also exist. They are divided into different tribes and clans, and each tribe or clan is for the most part mono-race. That is to say, all of the eastern plains tribe based in Aveta (Cameron's tribe) are the same "race" as him. Races are thought of mostly in terms of tribes/clans, without other such ideas, so even two elf-like beings if they are from differing tribes will tend to think of themselves as different.
There are two main rules to how beings in Cameron's world work: all are humanoid in appearance (albeit with various add-ons like tails, wings, claws, fur, etc) and about human in size (ranging from about three feet tall to nine feet tall for average heights). Besides this, all beings are (in theory) capable of reproducing with all other beings. However, because multi-tribe or tribeless cities have only begun to appear in the last hundred years it is considered anything from rare to unseemly to have children with those not from your tribe in most regions. Due to the limited contact on a global scale, most beings will have a basic understanding of tribes or clans that are in their region, but no one has ever performed a comprehensive study of all the tribes or clans in the World as of yet, so how many and how varied "races" can truly be is unknown.
Technology and Magic
The proper technological level of the World Cameron is from is about that of the later nineteenth century, but with certain notable variations, and much of it only haven been constructed in the last few decades. For example, the equivalent of a telegraph has only recently been invented, but some simple scientific theories such as heliocentric thought have yet to be pioneered. As a rule of thumb, in hir World military technology is lower than the equivalent period in our world (the most recent invention in firearm technology is the repeating rifle, limiting them to civil war technology and before) but medical techniques are notably advanced as compared to that time period (albeit not at the level we know them as today). The assembly line is a recent invention for producing products, and factories have begun to spring up in the multi-tribe or tribe-neutral cities mentioned above.
At the same time as technology advancing though, so too has magic advanced. The theory of magic in hir World is that it is making use of excess energy from the leylines stored into the body and then released to manipulate the surrounding area. However, because the leylines flow in different ways in different areas, it is traditionally bound to the will of the area it is being used in: that is to say, in the energy-rich poles, magic is very easy to use potently, but in a desert where there is little energy, it is very hard to use. This was changed about a century ago, however, when the Spheres were perfected. A method was found to condense excess leyline energy into a holding chamber of a certain type of crystal. In fact, the earliest cities and the earliest factories were created to respectively mine and refine the crystals to create Spheres. Despite worldwide exchange being very limited, the Spheres sold like wildfire, for the implementation of them allowed for reliable air-travel (for one or two man fliers only) and greater sea travel (using them as a means to power steam engines).
In short, magic and technology work hand in hand in Cameron's world; the basis of almost all modern science comes in some form from the implementation of leyline energy, which is also the basis of magic theory.
University
The university Cameron attends it technically named the Second Central Southern University, but because it is the only university in hir region, sie will almost always refer to it simply as "University" or "the university" unless asked to clarify, simply because it was hir only option and the only option in terms of upper level schooling for tribes/clans within hundreds of miles. Like almost all of the other universities founded in hir World so far, hirs came to be about thirty years ago, founded by progressives that lived in the multi-tribal city which the university sits on the outskirts of (founded originally to mine for crystals and create Spheres out of them). It has been sending feelers and recruiters out into the tribes/clans of the region ever since.
It boasts a very high recruitment rate and student body despite this, at almost three thousand students, it is much larger than most people going into it are used to being around in their lives, as most tribes/clans are that size or smaller. In the last thirty years graduates out of it have made up the vast majority of the job-base in the city, replacing what was once dominated by skilled foreign workers rather quickly, and some of them have even gone abroad to foreign cities. It is something of an unusual risk to send people there, but the benefits - both of the individual and often the tribe as well, should the individual make a name for themselves - provide incentive enough to encourage people to go.
University
• Dogs = Don't exist.
• Wolves = As normal wolves, but generally smaller. Wolves in Cameron's world are the size of a medium-sized dog in general and hunt in very large packs. A rare few species are larger and hunt in smaller packs.
• Seals = Commonly domesticated, seals look like normal seals but for the fact they rarely grow larger than the average cat, and are capable of floating (and therefore swimming) in the air. They eat vegetation as well.
• Goats = Don't exist.
• Lizards = Resemble a winged snakes (imagine images of quetzalcoatl), but are flightless. They can glide short distances depending on the species.
• Horses = Resemble a cross between a reindeer and a conventional horse. Tend to have antlers and a reindeer-like head, but a more horse-like tail and hoof structure. Usually the size of a conventional horse, depending on species.
If there are any further questions you can ask them here and/or I can edit in new things later.
