Song of the Day: Ani DiFranco - Both Hands
Thought of the Day: "I am not an angry girl, but it seems like I've got everyone fooled." - Ani Difranco
I had dinner with the Schweiger family last night, and Meri was talking about break-up music, and I realized most of the music I like is angsty break up music. Maybe I should just give up and admit to being angsty. But this is my list of awesome break up music. Just in case any of you kids are angsty and broken up.
1. Ani Difranco - Untouchable Face "You know I don't look forward to seeing you again/you'll look like a photograph of yourself, taken from far far away, and I wouldn't know what to do, and I wouldn't know what to say except/Fuck you, and your untouchable face/and fuck you for existing in the first place"
This was no contest for number one. I know I'm kind of obsessed with Ani today, but this song is so great. It's that feeling of just...hating somebody you used to be with for a stupid childish reason, and knowing how stupid that is. It's like, screw you for no reason other than you hurt me and it made me mad. This is essentially THE feeling in breaking up.
2. Jason Mraz - You and I Both "And it's okay, if you had to go away/Just remember the telephone works both ways/But if I never hear it ring/If nothing else I'll think the bells inside have finally found you someone else and that's okay/Cuz I'll remember everything you sang/You and I both loved what you and I spoke of/And others just dream of/And if you could see me now then I'm almost finally finally out of words..."
Ahh...Jason Mraz. This song is for the less angry break up. I love it because it's about being okay with breaking up. It's sad, but you remember why you loved them in the first place, and there is a lot of things left to hold on to.
3. Bob Dylan - Most of the Time "Most of the time she ain't even on my mind/Wouldn't know her if I saw her, she's that far behind/Most of the time I can't even be sure if she was ever with me, or if I was ever with her...Most of the time"
Ani did a version of this with him that is so hardcore teh r0x0rz. This one is really great for the unfinished business type thing. It's about being mostly over somebody...but there's still that little chunk of hurt and love and jealousy that keeps hanging on.
4. Liz Phair - Why Can't I "Isn't this the best part of breaking up/Finding someone else you can't get enough of"
Hahaha, that is the best line ever about breaking up. It's one of the few really cool things about breaking up, and ironically, one of the only cool things Liz Phair has ever said.
5. The Dandy Warhols - We Used to be Friends "A long time ago we used to be friends but I/haven't thought of you lately at all/if ever again a greeting I send to you/short and sweet to the soul I intend...Just remember me when you were good to go/Just remember me when we used to be friends"
Ha, this song is so bitter and so emotional at the same time. He's talking about completely letting go...like, it's over, so forget about it. Just remember when we were still cool.
Now, as an added bonus, I give you...The Best Song to Play Air Guitar to and Freak Out your Friends AND your Neighbors (Because you Have the Volume Turned Up that High)!! And the award goes to...
THE WHO - BABA O'RILEY!!! Which is not actually called Teenage Wasteland contrary to popular belief. Kind of like that Billy Joel song is called Stormfront, but everybody calls it We Didn't Start the Fire.
Anyways, in light of being angsty and wanting to wakeboarding instead of anything else, I am going to take shower. Which probably means I will think about taking a shower, and instead will sit here and play Solitaire. And wish Raxel would get online.
PS: Jen and Aimee, this was really for guys. I love you both and at the very least don't want to see you guys hurting. Mad love girls...really.
