I really don't think it has a chance in canon, but it annoys me how it's simultaneously presented as a sign of Sakura's shallow immaturity and a sign of her beautiful capacity for womanly love. The first doesn't bug me, but the second is what the fandom seems to latch onto. I mean, you're supposed to identify with Sakura's heartbreak over Sasuke, but then she's supposed to get over it. Instead, Kishi's milking it for all the drama it's worth.
No, I don't think it has a chance either, and I agree with your logic- it can't be both shallow immaturity and womanly love. They've been apart for so long, the relationship hasn't grown. If anything, they're even further apart.
Yes, Kishi is milking the drama, and I think young fans really follow it, but more mature fans are SO TIRED.
Not to mention the fact that he tried to KILL her.
!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!
I hated this pairing before I read that part, but after? I just don't see how folks can get around that. Sakura getting over that is NOT romantic. It's frightening.
Sasuke/Sakura? I don't see how Kishi can redeem Sasuke's actions to the point where it's feasible to hand him a love interest. His redemption is on shaky enough ground as it is. If you're referring to Sakura ending the series still in love with Sasuke, I could buy that. I'd be disappointed, and I'd feel like he wasted the relationship that was built up between Naruto and Sakura, but it wouldn't kill me. I do think that ending is only possible with no canon ships, and given Kishi's track record, I wouldn't put it past him.
I could handle her being in love with him a lot better than him returning it, because then we're not rewarding her for the obsession and self-debasement. At least we can rely on the Team 7 friendship overshadowing any romantic messes. :/
This relationship was shallow as fuck when it was introduced, and hearing Sakura scream for Sasuke every time they got into a skirmish made it less believable that her love would develop into something mature and deep. The fact that everything I like about Sakura vanishes the second she looks at Sasuke just makes it worse.
Definitely this.
I hate this pairing with a passion. It's nothing but a vapid, baseless crush perpetuated by self-destructive emotional immaturity, stubbornly lavished on a nearly soulless cold fish. There's zero believable motivation for it now, and even less chemistry.
It has all the worst characteristics of misplaced affection, and I don't see it becoming canon. Not just because I think Kishimoto has been building toward something more meaningful for Sakura, but also for the obvious reason that this pairing makes no satisfying sense in the story as it stands up to this point.
If Kishi does end with this as canon, he will prove himself far less of a sensitive and capable storyteller than I believe him to
I knew I wouldn't have to worry about being too negative for my entire readership. ;) If it's supposed to be a sympathetic love story, it's really awkwardly written. They're both fantastic characters, but it's too unbalanced to work as an actual relationship, tragic and dysfunctional or not.
Since you said there was going to be ship bashing behind the cut, I took that to mean it applied to comments as well so I didn't mince words. ^_^
I agree that Sasuke and Sakura are too interesting and fascinating to hang this mess on. It's just wrong. It feels wrong, and it would appear to me it's been written to turn out wrong. But then, you know my preference and expectation. ;)
I agree with you! But i read ALL pairings, so i dont actually mind if its Sasuke/Sakura, Naruto/Sakura or Sasuke/Naruto. >.< Though some small, tiny part of me thinks that Kishi is going to kill Naruto and Sasuke both in some epic and really, really, really, really long battle. And then make Sakura Hokage (following Tsunade's footsteps?). XD
Well, that's what i think, though anything could happen~
I try to tolerate all pairings, because I love all the characters involved. I just don't go out of my way for SasuSaku.
I think Kishi loves his characters way too much to kill them dead. I wouldn't at all put it past him to kill them for dramatic effect and then bring them back to life, but if he couldn't kill Kakashi, no way can he kill Naruto and Sasuke. I kind of hope Tsunade dies, though, for exactly that reason.

It agitates the hell out of me that this ship attracts so many and that Kishi and the anime people perpetuate it.
