So Janet Jackson went on David Letterman, and he brought up the whole Superbowl breast thing again. Needless to say, Janet was sick of hearing about it. When David pressed the issue, Janet said, "Oh Jesus!"
And they bleeped it. They bleeped her saying "Oh Jesus!"
I had not realized that "Jesus" was a dirty word. Last I heard, Jesus was an all right guy, and people could call out to him any time. Last I heard, "Oh, Jesus!" was in common usage as a phrase uttered in frustration - and "Oh, God!" has been too. For Christ's sake, my boyfriend was raised atheistic and he still says "Oh God" and "Oh Jesus" as a part of his common dialogue.
Or maybe now of days, all words said in frustration or a not-perfectly-nice tone of voice are automatically curses that have to be held at bay from the hoardes of frustrated and not-so-nice listeners.
When I read about Janet's visit to Letterman yesterday I was forcibly reminded of being a small child, when my religiously fanatical babysitter was constantly shushing me for words that held no bloody harm. It got to be ridiculous, the words that were bad to her and forbidden to us; the woman saw curses everywhere. And I swore with and without meaning to, because with her it made no difference - the bad words and the punishments were all in her screwy head.
I have no doubts as to where the current hysteria truly lies.
