Got Close Again

One of the most beauteous dreams I've had is a recurring one, of the Neverending Cemetery. I've only gotten inside a few times, but oh, I'll never forget them. It's a place of deep copses and broad glades, fireflies, gorgeous flowers of every description, fountains, and statuary and structures reminiscent of ancient Greece. There are dark, cool shadows but no threat in anything, and plenty of rich colors despite the general dimness. Even though it seems to be in an eternal state of night, there's always enough light to see by and it's never cold. Sometimes you see gravestones; other times you just see monuments. It's not one cemetery but a world of cemeteries that just keeps going and leading deeper. You never get bored while exploring it, and it's the closest thing I've experienced to what the Greeks called Elysium.

I've had some dreams where I'm outside of it, trying to find the entrance or get around to going inside. These dreams haven't been very frequent - and it's been some years since my last one - but last night I had one. I was outside in a hilly area and found an estate. Just gazing at the impressive front gate made me suspect it wasn't a typical estate. I walked out onto a terrace and looked down to see these monuments, and they had a size and grace that instantly told me they belonged to the Neverending Cemetery. I began looking for the stairs down or a way in when I woke up, which was a little disappointing - but I was far more glad to have gotten close to it again.
