You know, I've had a rare couple of dreams that were like that, and they were enough to make me wake up feeling wounded, scared, and horrified. I try not to even remember them. I'll take the upsetting dreams I've been having over that any day, any day at all. I am so sorry you had to go through that, but at least you got to wake up into a world where he's okay. And how old is he now, anyway?
I will say this: my dreams have helped me to understand things like parenting a little better. For a long time, I couldn't imagine what it would be like to have kids. One night I dreamt I was the single parent of three and I'd just lost my job, and I came home so scared for them. I took two of them in my arms and held onto them so tight because they were my life. My whole heart swelled up with it. Their worried eyes killed me, and my whole being was set on not letting them down. I woke up with emotional impressions so strong that I have had a better understanding since.
I don't know that the good dreams make up for the bad. I do know that I'd like to dream peacefully again.
