Old Habits Die Hard

I've had the same phone number since I started paying for my own phone line when I was about 19 years old.  I've always had a land line and I've clung to it even though it is benefiting me less and less.  I think the time has come, however, to admit that my land line is redundant and to put that trusty old number to rest.

I'm not on the phone as much as I used to be, for one.  A decade ago, I used my phone a great deal on a regular day, and I had friends all over the country.  I really enjoyed my phone time.  Now, most of my phone conversations are brief, usually leading up to face-to-face meetings.  I've got texts and email, to boot.

I've been using my cell phone for long distance anyway, secondly, particularly since cell phones don't distinguish between local and long distance calls.  Minutes are minutes.  I don't know that many folks who are far away anymore.  Half the time I call work, it's with my cell phone, while I'm running from one class to another.

So next week, after the holiday, I'll be looking around for a good deal.  I don't want to have to buy an expensive new phone or get locked into a yearly contract.  I might end up staying with my current carrier, VirginMobile, and trying out their $29.99 a month (300 anytime, 1000 nights & weekends), with $5 extra for texts.  It's ridiculous that I should get attached to something as mundane as a phone number but I can feel that some nostalgia is there.  But it's not like plenty of other things haven't changed over the last year - this'll just be one more.
