weekend madness

It was another weekend with down time that wasn't really down time, but I'm not complaining, 'cause it was all fun, if slightly exhausting.

Friday I cleaned the house for the gatherings this weekend, watched a bit of tv, ended up staying up pretty late, considering I was up at 6:45 to take care of the dogs before going for a bike ride at 7:30. A friend had a comprehensive exam for her doctoral program, and wanted to decompress with an early morning run, which I accompanied on my trusty Huffy. Thank goodness for my wonderful new gel seat - it was actually really nice to be out so early - the weather was still cool and breezy, and it felt good to be up.

Got home and spent the whole morning preparing for the baby shower that I threw for my best friend from high school (we both grew up in Chicago and ended up here, which worked out nicely). Spent from 11:30 til 3:30 drinking mimosas and chatting. I'm amused by her catholicness and that of her friends. The brunch was lovely - casseroles, chocolate pancakes, fruit, and cake - and there were seven of us, which was just enough for the conversation to flow without being overwhelming. Party was over at 3:30, and at 4:30 I headed out with the friend above, for post-comps decompression, which we did over dinner with people from her department at a nice little italian place in College Park. I'm much less scared of College Park when most of the mass of undergrads is gone for the summer. Went home and promptly passed out asleep for a couple of hours, then lounged and napped and played with dogs.

Sunday morning headed out to Farmer's Market and bought Tim fresh strawberries and a bouquet of flowers as a welcome home giftie, and then hosted a craft gathering which was wonderfully relaxing. I learned how to crochet granny squares! I started one this morning, I was so excited about them :) and I got to visit with minnaleigh, tmancuso and krasota, who provided wonderful company for the afternoon. We talked a little about an upcoming gathering which will hopefully materialize in October - yay! DC with friends when it's not ridiculously hot out sounds so nice. Tim got home late, but not as late as we thought he would be, and I cooked grilled cheese and greenbeans with caramelized onions, which don't really go together, but our house is a little low on food :)

So yup, good company, good weekend, learned stuff and everything. Our garden is looking great - our tomatoes are 5' high, and summer hasn't beaten me up too much yet.
