History:
Karkat Vantas' blood is of freakish color in a world where it's hue determines what level you hold in society. His happens to be bright, cherry red, putting him down in the 'mutant' category, which would lead him to being executed on the spot if anyone found out. Blood hierarchy is a strong, powerful thing and the center of the trolls politics and culture, and Karkat has to struggle with hiding his own.
His real story, however starts on his birthday, when he and 11 friends start to play Sgrub. Originally, the trolls are divided into two teams, and he trolls his way into being the leader of the red team. The two groups make their separate ways through the initial stages of the game, achieving their goals quickly and rather easily. Almost too easily. Terezi is Karkat's server player, meaning the one that guides him through the first few parts. They seemingly form a bond a little different from the rest of the trolls.
Their planet was entirely destroyed by meteors brought forth by the Sgrub, and the reward for winning the game is being able to once again live in their world. However, something goes wrong the moment they were about to claim their prize, throwing their game session off entirely. This interruption happens to come from another session of an identical game in another universe, played by 4 human kids. As a result of said interruption, the 12 trolls end up stranded on a meteor in space, in an area they call the Veil.
In this place, the colored teams dissolve and Karkat becomes their leader, taking charge of their attempts to fix what goes wrong in these 4 human kids' own session. Karkat is especially angry with Jade, whom he originally believes to be the direct cause for the failure of their session due to the interruption. He also decides to troll the kids backwards, starting from the end of their adventure, where he is at his most frustrated with them. Speaking mostly to John, he ends up even further irritated, as the more he talks to him, the less John knows about the game and the trolls. Still, he persists, and although he originally believes John to be his hate soul mate, they quickly become friends.
As Karkat continues to troll the kids, he does his very best to help them avoid the same mistakes. He gives them tips and advice to avoid the worst of it, or at least try to set things right, although he quickly realises that this is impossible. He also sees that none of the kids are truly to blame, as they tend to listen to everything the trolls tell them to do. Their session still needs to be fixed, however, so Karkat's frustration does not vanish.
Meanwhile, he also tries to keep his friends on track, keeping an eye on them and asking various things of them to help out. He elaborates different plans, but most of them fall apart. As the game progresses, things get worse and worse in the Veil. Tensions are high, the trolls going a little stir crazy stuck on their meteor, and their complicated romance only adds fuel to the fire. As things deteriorate, Karkat blames himself further and insists on driving everyone harder.
Many things seem to happen at once, the first being one of the trolls deciding to join the villain's side of the game. He threatens them, asks them to follow him, and when no one complies, he kills two and harms one. Karkat stands there in shock, unable to do anything but gape as his friends are attacked and killed. He vows to find and kill the one that did this, although it will be done by someone else. He gives one of them a teary kiss, and then has a terrifying conversation with one of his best friends, who seems to have snapped completely. Gamzee, being of superior blood color, has an urge to eradicate all lower blood ranks. He had been under control so far due to being high from a certain type of pie, but once he ran out and sobered up, his instincts kicked in.
Karkat does not take any of this well, worried about his remaining friends, terrified for his own life, and feeling that this would not have happened if he'd been a better leader. Shaken up, he attempts to run and hide from Gamzee while trying to wake up his injured friend and contact the others. He sends one of them off to stop Gamzee, but that leads to the death of two others. He manages to speak to a few people, warning Terezi about Gamzee, and finds out in another conversation that he might be the cause for everything going wrong, after all. He realises that the kids' universe is sick, that their session was doomed from the start. He neglected a task that he had been told was important, and in doing so the kids' universe they created was incomplete and terminally ill, dying slowly of cancer. Karkat admits to being wrong, and apologizes to Jade.
Eventually, the few survivors find themselves in the same place. At that point, there are only 5 of them left in the veil. When he spots Terezi he makes his way to her immediately and pulls her into a tight embrace, relieved to see her alive. Karkat is still shaken up, and perhaps he is on the edge of snapping, as his reaction to Gamzee's arrival is to walk up to him and tap his face while shushing him, until they hug, and we see his very first smile.
Shortly after, he speaks to John about a new plan, filling him in on what's going on. They need to cause the Scratch, which will reset the session. However, they're not sure what will happen to them, and so Karkat and the others work together to make sure everyone will be safe.
Personality: Karkat Vantas has a very crab like personality. The adjective 'crabby' applies to him in more ways than one. Firstly, he represents the Cancer astrological sign, associated with a crab. Secondly, he is constantly angry, bitter, and ready to lash out at anyone. And, finally, he protects himself under a hard shell of insults and attacks, rather than leaving himself vulnerable.
Karkat is once described as someone that would be a much better human than he is a troll. Trolls are, by nature, a violent and angry species. They seek competition everywhere, and are even pressured in finding relationships as they risk execution if they are not ready in time. Finding enjoyment out of riling each other up, lying, manipulating and harming each other, they are far different from human beings in multiple ways. They tend to live much more selfish lives, rather than preach selflessness like humans do. However, Karkat is different. His difference is that he does not willingly harm anyone physically, and cares about everything, even too much by human standards.
He gives the blood caste importance only because he is aware of where he stands in it, but otherwise would not be the kind to reinforce it, unlike most trolls. He also seeks to solve issues by talking, or planning ahead, rather than through violence or competition. He prefers to get things done without any blood being spilled. Karkat tries incredibly hard to do everything in what he believes is the right way. When presented with a problem, he will carefully think of a solution and execute it to the very detail, or try to. Unfortunately, if something goes wrong he ends up at loss. A plan not going as planned throws him off, and he either ends up petrified and in a panic, or screaming at the people involved. For Karkat, things going as planned is incredibly important, as it allows less space for him to fail.
He absolutely despises failing, at anything. He considers a lot of the events in the game a personal failure of his, which only feeds his own self hatred. Due to his mutant blood color, he is already incredibly hard on himself. Even more so as he tries to make up for it, to prove himself as a worthy troll and constantly falls short. Karkat hates himself so much, in fact, that he believes he is his own kismesis (which is one of the trolls romances, a sort of hate-lover). There is absolutely nothing in this world that could convince him that he is not despicable, not pathetic, not disgusting and not a complete failure. Karkat internalizes a lot of anger, but exteriorizes just as much, as well.
He may come off as an asshole at first, since this is what he tends to be. A sort of defence mechanism, an automatic shield to protect himself from others, from feeling for others. He insults, he yells, he rants to and about his friends rather than showing any sort of positive affection. Strangers get the cold shoulder from him, until they weasel their way into his heart, in which case he tones it down a little, but never entirely. There are a few moments where Karkat allows himself a break, speaks honestly and reveals that he does care, that he does feel. In one instance, he responds to a '<3' from Terezi with his own. He admits to being friends with John, and that he was never truly that bad. He apologizes in a heartfelt manner to Jade for giving their universe cancer. He also cries at the sight of his dead friend.
Karkat may be an angry jerk, but he is not heartless. It's only to make up for how much he cares about everything, about doing things right and keeping people safe. He also has an interest in romance, his favorite type of movies being romantic comedies. He is also the go-to troll when his friends need advice on their relationships, and he always advises them, although it's ironic considering he has little to no experience. But he takes romance very seriously, and never skips out on the opportunity to dish out tips.
Ironically enough, his own love life isn't very successful. He seeks a true kismesis but fails to find a proper one, sinking as low as to think of himself as his own. As for their type of romance that is more akin to our own, matespritship, Karkat sort of has a thing with Terezi. This, however, is never truly confirmed, only hinted at. Karkat is not too sure where they stand, and, besides, he is much too busy with the game to pay proper attention. As a romantic, given the opportunity, he would likely make a big deal out of it. He makes his responsibilities come first, though, and even establishes a rule against interspecies sloppy make outs when he realises one of the human kids flirts with Terezi. Karkat recently became one of his best friend's moirail. A moirail is someone that keeps another troll in check, to help them stay in control rather than go crazy and hurt or kill someone. After Gamzee's initial rampage, Karkat manages to soothe him with a lot of face taps and a hug. He also has a friendly rivalry with Sollux, his other best friend, and has an understanding bond with Kanaya, who is very motherly towards them all. He might complain about the others, but he helps them out when they come to him, proving once again that he is not heartless.
As for the humans, he starts off with a very strong hatred of John, which eventually dissolves until they are begrudgingly good friends. He was also in conflict with Jade, but this also changed as the game moved along, although they still argue more than anything. As for Dave, Karkat holds nothing but contempt, partially due to the way he speaks with Terezi.
His constant rage is almost comedic at times, though he doesn't find much humour in it. Not the type to joke around when there are things to be done, he makes a good leader for the rest of the trolls. He somehow manages to keep them working together when they would have been at each others' throats much earlier than this, which is more than anyone else could have achieved, as one of them says. In short, Karkat is easy to dislike at first, as he dislikes everyone right off the bat. However, if you manage to make your way in, you'll see he is not all that bad, simply awkward and angry at the world for all the things that went wrong in his life. He tries hard, and works hard, and will stick by you through the roughest times if it's what it takes. He just won't ever admit to it, and might insult you if you try and drag it out of him.
Other: When Karkat is typing using text, it LOOKS LIKE THIS. HE USES ALL CAPS, OCCASIONALLY SKIPS OUT ON PUNCTUATION BUT USUALLY HE IS PRETTY DECENT WITH SYNTAX. Also, being a troll, his skin is grey, his eyes yellow rather than white, his teeth are sharp and he has two nubby candy corn colored horns on his head.

Third Person:
Being Karkat Vantas is hard. It's hard, and no one understands. He tries so hard, constantly, to achieve great things, to be the best, to show everyone. To make up for his blood color. Every time he makes a mistake, he hates himself a little more, quietly feeding his anger at the world. Karkat Vantas does not know the meaning of relaxing or enjoying oneself. He knows only being on edge, forming plans and taking action. He knows only telling off the morons he has to lead, making rules about sloppy make outs and keeping a juggaloo in check so he doesn't go on another murdering rampage.
He knows only that if he'd listened, taken the time, they wouldn't be where they are now. Perhaps they'd all still be alive, in their hives on a planet made just for them. Perhaps the kids would be safe, too, back with their weird lusus guardian things, happy. Sometimes Karkat feels the dam holding back his tears cracking, and in those moments he yells a little louder, his insults get a little harsher. He can't afford to cry. Not only is it weak, but the sight of his tears would reveal his blood color.
At least his romantic comedies won't be going anywhere. They'll always be there for him, waiting to be viewed, and free of judgement. If Karkat wants to curl up with snacks and cry his eyes out for a few hours while he imagines himself being swept away in someone's arms, they won't be telling a soul.
