So, I was browsing a Yaoi site - don't ask me why - and chanced on a typically drawn boy on boy doujin. The art was nice, there were supposed yaoi undertones (in the manga), and so with that in mind, I decided to check out the actual manga. I thought, what did I have to lose? I went to onemanga and clicked on Kaikan Phrase, and promptly realized that it was not at all what I expected. How could I not with the ugly huge-shouldered-male images glaring at me on the screen? What was this mangaka on when she pulled this idea from her ass!? LSD? Yes, I'm too lazy to check the author's name, and yes, I am being mean.
Kaikan Phrase made me die a little inside. It made my already dwindling like of shoujo manga kick the bloody bucket in a horrifying, yet satisfying way.
- The art - let me make it clear that I cannot stand male faces that are that disproportionate to the body and why oh why must the face be four times the size of the shoulders!? - betrays its age.
- The cliche plot - girl loses lyrics, boy magically discovers lyrics brushing his feet, and they embark on a fucking fluffy journey of nauseating stupidity.
- Hell, even the unoriginal characters - Girl=virgin who, even though there is sex ed for the ignorant, hasn't a clue what 'that heat down there is,' Boy=egotistical-and-lonely-and habitually jealous! Everything is bad. Really bad.
All of those aspects literally made me sick to my stomach; subsequently causing me to want puke. BUCKETS. I agree, that yes, I am being a bit dramatic, but seriously, I didn't even read the thing in entirety; just the the two most recent chapters!
I am now swearing off all manga that features incessant cuteness, eye's that take over nearly the whole face, and large shoulders. The latter just really freaks me out.
