20 years ... Chernobyl remembered

Twenty years since the worst nuclear disaster in the history of the world. And I feel the need to make a note here about it. I was amazed reading articles about it this morning, that Greenpeace activists all over the world were remembering it. I don't have an opinion one way or the other about Greenpeace, but I give them respect and thanks for ( Read more... )

There was an excellent article in this month's National Geographic.

There are a couple people at my work that hadn't even *heard* of Chernobyl. Oy. I've no idea how they managed that. History classes need to do a much better job of covering the last 50 years.

It's pretty scary to think about, that so many adults these days don't know about it. Even scarier that UN was trying to cover it up and say that it's not a big deal, and the death toll was greatly overrated. Thousands of people died within days and weeks, those that were cleaning it up. Even the doctors that were accompanying the high ranking firefighters to a hospital in Moscow to get them help died, a few days after getting them there. That's how much radiation the firefighters absorbed that they were emitting.

Boggles the freaking mind .. *shiver*
