As for the ... er ... varmints (hee), what about encasing the precious plants in chicken coop wire? It shouldn't impede their growth and will make it much harder for intruders (unless they're just that smart).

Yep, chicken wire is definitely in the plans, although I need to be able to move these easily with the weather. Growing plants here is still a learning curve for me; it's not as drop-dead easy as it was in California.
