Still a busy few days, which means that I've been on here less than I like to be ... but things should calm down a bit in a little while ( Read more... )

It's pretty amazing to behold the quality phone cameras can afford now, versus even just eight years ago, compared to the iPhone 3G's rather.. perfunctory camera, shall we say. =:) Beautiful view, needless to say, and again makes me wish I could be out there. At least it's refreshingly chilly here, even if as snowless as usual.

The marches were absolutely wonderful, for so many reasons - they proved his appeal is eclipsed by his opponents, just as in the popular vote, but even moreso, with his inauguration tallying somewhere around 250,000, versus the March, around double that just in DC, let alone New York, the Bay, LA, and so many more places, down to rural townships like Longville, Minnesota. In all, attendance across the US apparently handily surpassed four million. =:D

'Michelle Barton wishes she could be part of a big women's march on Saturday, but she lives in the tiny town of Longville, Minn.

"I thought OK, I'll just see what happens if I create my own march," she said. "It was kind of a lark."

Barton went to the Women's March website and signed up to host her own. She got out some tagboard and markers.

"My hope was that some people might join me," she said. "I have a very active imagination, so my worst case scenario was people driving by and taking pot shots at me."

Barton and her family moved from Denver to Minnesota in June, after her husband had a series of strokes and had to stop working. The cost of living in Longville is lower.

But the transition to living in a conservative rural town of less than 200 hasn't been easy.

Moving in the middle of a contentious election didn't help. She overheard people in local businesses talking politics. Mostly they supported President Donald Trump, who won Cass County.

Once she saw a guy wearing a T-shirt with an AK-47 on it. "It said, 'Over my dead body,'" she recalled. "That's a little bit of a culture shock for us."'

'Until very recently, Barton thought she'd be marching alone. She was fine with that, but a few days ago a total stranger saw her event on Facebook and said she'd stop by with her sister on their way through town.

But on Saturday, 66 people from Longville and nearby towns showed up to walk with Barton.

Lori Burks signed up via the website Friday night, and expected to be one of two marchers. When Burks got there, she said people looked at each other, amazed at the turnout in the area notorious for being quiet in the winter.'

If you're interested, there's an excellent thread on SLU capturing news of the event from all around the country, and indeed, the world, sometimes from folk who were present themselves:

Thanks for that story! I've seen similar ones from all across the country, helping disprove the notion that if you don't live in a big city you're automatically a social redneck. (My favorite story from this part of the world was from the town of Stanley, Idaho, near where I lived for a couple years as a kid. The ton has a population of 63, and 30 of them showed up for the march!

Though I try to stay away from Facebook nowadays, I did spend some time reading the Pantsuit Nation group there after the march ... lots of stories like that, and some very heartening ones.

As for the iPhone, if they could figure out how to add an optical zoom tho the thing I'd almost be ready to get rid of my "real" camera entirely. As it is, probably 80% of the shots I post here are just iPhone snaps, which is kind of amazing considering how awful smartphone cameras were just a few years ago ...
