[mixtape] 7-25-2012

Jul 25, 2012 03:46

It's my birthday, and I made a mixtape. Well, actually I made 3 (er, 4 if you count the condensed EP version) but they all go together.

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Epilogue
I always have a lot to say about my mixes, because I'm a storyteller and I just talk a lot about my process, I guess, but this post is actually going to be a diatribe. You can skip everything after the next paragraph and I won't be upset, but the next paragraph explains what's in the .zip files so it's better if you do read it.

There are four sections to this massive mix, because there's three distinct mixes about semi-related topics and then a pared-down EP version of the whole shebang. Chapter 1 is called "Hello, my name is Reili" and is about me, the human being. Chapter 2 is called "I am 21" and is about being 21, partying, and getting drunk. Chapter 3 is called "I don't want to be 21" and it's about, well, being a kid/teenager and never wanting to grow up. The EP version is five tracks that were cut from the other 3 mixes put together to achieve the teal deer version of the mix. If you click the cover image up there, it'll take you to the download for the digital booklet.

Okay, now that we've got that out of the way, now I can talk about each of the individual mixes.

20. I'll Make A Man Out of You (Japanese) [Mulan]
21. California Gurls [Katy Perry]

The first thing you should know is that this mix is partially remixed from Her Name is Yoshimi, because they're both mixes about me and there's only so many songs that I actively consider my theme music.

I could explain each specific song and why it's on here, but that's probably overdoing more than I already am. So the important songs are 02, 06, 12, 16, and 21.

02 is important because lyrics from it are plastered all over my journal. Kind of. My name field is "Her name is Yoshimi." and the title of my reading page is "Yoshimi, you won't let those robots eat me." My middle name* is actually Yoshimi, so I thought that was funny. I really won't let those robots eat you, though. ♥

06 is important because the parts of the song that don't apply to me are easier to count. "White" is chief among them, but here are some others: I obviously didn't attend M.I.T., I don't do vector calculus for fun, none of my schools have had an AV club, and I've never actually been to a RenFaire.

12 is important for a number of reasons. It's the song I most frequently play at recitals. It's a song I've played at a bunch of important occasions in my life. It's a song I associate with being Okinawan and trying to remember that I'm not 100% Japanese. It's my favorite song to play on koto.

I also think the lyrics are pretty cool:
Nashiba nani gutun nairu gutu yashiga
Nasan yui karadu naran sadami
(You can do anything if you try,
but you cannot if you do not.)
16 is important because Kurama.

21 is important because I am (and probably always will be) a California Girl. My sun-kissed skin is so hot it'll melt your popsicle. ;)

* Technically Yoshimi is the first name I'm supposed to use in all the situations that require a Japanese name. Usually I just use it as my middle name instead of Callista on forms and shit.

I am 21
01. Watashi ni Happy Birthday [Megumi Hayashibara]
02. Shots [LMFAO]
03. Turning 21 [Hanson]
04. House Party [3OH!3]
05. 21 [Flo-rida]
06. Tik Tok [Ke$ha]
07. Twenty One [The Cranberries]
08. Ten Rounds of Jose Cuervo [Tracey Byrd]
09. 21 and Invincible [Something Corporate]
10. I Love This Bar [Toby Keith]
11. In My Mind [Amanda Palmer]
12. We Are Young [fun.]
13. One Year Past Twenty [Maggie and Judd]
14. Just Dance [Lady Gaga]
15. 21 [The Lucksmiths]
16. Damn You Look Good And I'm Drunk (Scandalous) [Cobra Starship]
17. Unemployed in Summertime [Emiliana Torrini]
18. Starships [Pentatonix]
19. 21 [Corey Smith]
20. CLUB DRUNK PARTY HANDS [Andrew Huang]
21. Damn Rough Night [Artist vs Poet]

So this was the mix I set out to make. Well, I wanted a mix of 21 songs about turning/being 21, but that turned out to be impossible because apparently no one writes songs about being 21. They do write a lot of songs about alcohol and partying, though, so this is a mix about the kind of 21st birthdays you see in movies with a little bit of reflection thrown in for good measure.

And also because apparently most people write introspective and gloomy songs about turning 21 instead of songs about going out and getting drunk. Look, I know the legal drinking limit is lower like everywhere else on the planet, but American artists need to fill this void! Turning 21 is an excuse to get DRUNK and PAR-TAY. You're not supposed to cry into your beer about it.

Well, you can cry into your beer about it but I'm under the impression that most people don't so really there should be more songs about partying because it's your 21st birthday.

(But the mix is improved by the very presence of "CLUB DRUNK PARTY HANDS," so I can't be terribly upset about the fact that my original plan didn't shake out. Besides, plans change.)

I don't want to be 21
01. akidagain [Travie McCoy]
02. Aaron's Party (Come and Get It) [Aaron Carter]
03. Let's Go to the Mall [Robin Sparkles]
04. What Is This Feeling? [Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth]
05. That's The Way We Roll [Jonas Brothers]
06. Seventeen [Alexa Vega]
07. Dancing Queen [A*teens]
08. Seventeen Forever [Metro Station]
09. Fifteen [Taylor Swift]
10. Baby [Justin Beiber]
11. A Song About Love [Charlie McDonnell]
12. Teenage Dream [Katy Perry]
13. Bouncing off the Ceiling (Upside Down)[A*Teens]
14. Daddy's Little Girl [Jesse McCartney]
15. Candy Floss [Alex Day]
16. Incredibad [The Lonely Island]
17. Soco Ammaretto Lime [Brand New]
18. High School Musical [High School Musical]
19. Ocean Avenue [Yellowcard]
20. Grow Up [Simple Plan]
21. Seventeen [Ladytron]

The second plan for that mix up there was to have 11 songs about not wanting to grow up/being a teenager and 10 songs about 21, but then this mix started taking on a life of its own and so I just split them into two. And now I have a 63 song mixtape about me turning 21.

This mix is part songs that I listened to when I was younger about being younger and part songs about being a dumb teenager in love, but all of it is tinted with nostalgia goggles because I don't want to remember how much being younger actually sucked at times. I just want to pretend like I'm seventeen forever.

(Which I could probably pull off for a couple more years, seeing as I have apparently aged very little since I was twelve. I mean, someone mistook me for being separated from my parents at Comic-Con last year which was simultaneously flattering and annoying.)

Epilogue
01. They Don't Understand [Dreamstreet]
02. Trout Heart Replica [Amanda Palmer]
03. Bear [The Antlers]
04. Damnit [Decaydance All-Stars]
05. Flying in the Sky [G Gundam]

These are the five songs that got nixed from the other mixes. "They Don't Understand" because that much Jesse McCartney is overkill, even for me. "Trout Heart Replica" because that much Amanda Palmer is overkill, but I really couldn't decide between "I Google You" and "Trout Heart Replica" for the first mix. "Bear" because I rearranged the second mix and ended up not needing this song but being sad I couldn't use it. "Damnit" because it's about growing up and not about not wanting to grow up (wow, that's a weird sentence). "Flying the Sky" because it's my theme song and I was going to put it on my mix but then I realized it's not really about me I just adopted it as my themesong because . . . of reasons.

The moral of the story here is that when you leave me alone with no internet and a lot of free time on my hands, I do really crazy things and have a quarter-life crisis in the form of a 68-song mixtape.

The end.
