Summary: Patrick spends a lot of time in the counselor's office being told that the music in him should be suppressed and all it takes is willpower.
normal behavior
Patrick tries to be normal. He tries to tamp down the music in his soul and be like everyone else but it's really hard. There's just so much music that he overflows with it and before he realizes what he's doing he's tapping out a drumbeat on the table at school and the other kids are edging away from him like he's got a disease. Patrick spends a lot of time in the counselor's office being told that the music in him should be suppressed and all it takes is willpower. He spends a lot of time in therapy trying to get "better."
To be honest, Patrick's not sure what "better" is. There are a lot of things that seem to be banned for a good reason, but music isn't one of them. Also Patrick pretty much thinks that people who say you shouldn't do music are stupid, but the way Patrick keeps slipping up makes his parents nervous, so Patrick tries to be like all the other kids. He tries to be regular. It's just hard. His therapist asks him what he likes, the sorts of things he's into, and Patrick shrugs.
"I like tying people up."
"Good," his therapist says, "do you like anything else?"
"I don't know. I haven't tried a whole lot of things."
"Do you want to?"
Patrick shrugs again, "I don't really feel like it, no."
His therapist raises an eyebrow and writes something down on her notepad. Patrick tries not to tap a rhythm onto the arm of his chair and tries not to tell his therapist that he's much rather get his hands on a guitar then a girl. That'll just get him concerned looks and more therapy and seriously? Patrick's sick of it all. He's fucked six girls and he even fucked a couple dudes to make sure that he didn't swing that way, but none of it stuck. None of the things that they talk about on TV seem that interesting, and Patrick really just wants to make music. He glances at the clock.
"Are you dating anyone?"
"No," Patrick looks back over to his therapist, "I haven't really found anyone I want to get serious with."
The rest of the session passes much the same way as the last half-dozen sessions, and Patrick is grateful to be free of her invasive questions. Once he;s free, though, he wanders down the street to the Border's. He's browsing around in the history section, and there's a book on music history, so he picks it up and flips through it. It's an interesting subject, so Patrick doesn't feel bad looking through it. When he puts it down, though, a guy walks over to him.
"Hey. I just noticed you looking through the music history book. Are you taking a class or something?"
Patrick raises a wary eyebrow, "No. It's just interesting."
The guy makes an interested noise, "Cool. I'm Joe. I like getting rough with people."
"Patrick. I, uh, like tying people up."
The guy holds out his hand and Patrick shakes it. He's not supposed to talk to strangers, but the guy seems harmless enough so Patrick lets him natter on about music history and the guy is actually really knowledgeable so Patrick gets roped into going over to his place and Patrick figures that this is what his parents want, so he texts his mom before going over to Joe's place.
On the way there, they're talking and Patrick unconsciously starts tapping out a beat on his thigh. Joe slows and looks down, and Patrick stops. He pulls his cap down lower and tries to shrink away.
"Do you like music?"
Patrick bites his lip, "Maybe?"
Joe grins, "Change of plans, then. We're going to go see a friend of mine."
That makes Patrick fidget, but at least Joe hadn't recoiled in terror so Patrick thinks that's got to be a plus. They're going in a direction Patrick's never been until they reach a kind of dingy-looking apartment. Joe bangs on the door and there's a coming! from somewhere inside the apartment before a short, dark-haired guy yanks open the door. He looks between Joe and Patrick before pointing to Patrick.
"Who's he?"
"I'm Patrick," Patrick says, "I like tying people up and stuff."
Joe leans in close to Pete, "He also likes music."
The guy grins, face-splitting, and ushers them both in before shutting the door. Patrick has to take in the apartment for a minute, because there are instruments everywhere. The guy sticks out his hand, and Patrick shakes it on autopilot.
"I'm Pete and I like music."
"You're," Patrick stares at Pete, "You're a musician."
