Another rap, because otherwise I'll never have enough posts. This one, unlike the last one, was actually for an assignment where we had to write poetry. My teacher has asked when "GETTING LITERARY UP IN THIS HOOD" will be available on itunes and the answer is NEVER, because I can't rap and making people pay money to listen to me rap badly would be cruel and unusual punishment. Also I have no sick beats to put behind my words. I feel a lot like Amanda Palmer right now, although I am not married to Neil Gaiman. It would be pretty awesome if I was (and he wasn't old enough to be my dad), though.

$HE/ME's "Wilde and Crazy Thoughts" from her album "Getting Literary Up in This Hood."

I'm not quite sure when we all started thinking
that every thing we write needs deep, deep reasoning.
So maybe I wrote a story 'bout my toaster
and when it's just a story people don't understand
that there is no symbolism and it's really that bland
my toaster doesn't stand for death or innocence
oh why can't you see that it's just not me
symbolism and I just don't agree!

There's a case to be made for aestheticism
and even though Wilde gets criticism
I think he had something when he said:
All art is quite useless, in the end.

I mean, art is pretty and I like it all right
but it isn't gonna keep me warm at night.
Art feeds the soul and not the body
And art for art's sake may be slowly dying
because it seems like metaphor's all we're writing.

Don't take anything too seriously,
that's not the way the world is meant to be
and yeah, things can have a deeper meaning
but if you go to deep you'll end up being
like DiCaprio in that movie Inception
and people will say "You just don't get it."

Four levels of metaphor,
now what are you waiting for?
It's time to go deeper.

It's like I can't take anything for granted,
and everything I say has to be planted
into my reader's mind unknowingly
and all of this is showing me
that it's all my worst fears realized
and a toaster can't be a toaster anymore.
