Summary: The first time Spencer meets Pete and shakes hands with him, something changes.
hats need a beat (like awake needs asleep)
The first time Spencer meets Pete and shakes hands with him, something changes. It's hard to tell what at first, but as the days go on and the time between seeing Pete and the current day stretches on and on, Spencer figures out what it is. There's a space inside him that isn't him, it's Patrickbassbasscan'tsleepwon'tsleepmusicmusichellohelloSpencer?
Spencer jerks away from that space, drowns it out with onetwothreefour onetwothreefour.
It doesn't go away, though. The space in him that isn't him stays and stays and stays and eventually it starts to hurt. It aches and Spencer doesn't know what to do. Doesn't know if he can handle this. Can't handle this. Can't take the constant and painful ache for something something what thing? Pete. He misses wants needs needs cannot live without Pete.
But that doesn't make any sense, because Pete can't be his soulmate. That's Ryan isn't it? Isn't it?
When they see Pete again, everything stops. It's like a screaming screaming screaming transformed into onetwothreefour onetwothreefour calm calm regular nice. Ryan shoots a worried glance at Spencer, and Spencer gives him a smile. It's alright. Nothing has changed, nothing at all-except for how Pete keeps finding excuses to touch Spencer. Innocent touches, things like a hand on a should, a soft punch to a shoulder, a guiding hand on a lower back, but they make Spencer feel at ease.
They don't talk about what's going on beyond that. Don't acknowledge it.
But then Pete goes away again, and the screaming comes back. Spencer tries to focus, tries to drown out the sceams with steady beats. It doesn't work, so Spencer does the only thing he can think of. He pulls back the curtain surrounding the part inside his head that isn't him.

Spencer wavers for a moment before pulling back the curtain again. For all he acts like he's mature and put together, he's still not even twenty, just out of high-school and scared. Pete is chaos and bass thumping through Spencer's body, but he's calm too. So Pete wraps around Spencer and says him a lullaby and Spencer feels better. Can face the world again, knows which way is up again. They still don't talk about it, just let it be what it is.
It's not like Spencer isn't used to having people in his head, isn't used to Ryan invading his thoughts Spencer Spencer pay attention to me and Pete kind of the same. Sometimes Pete will wrap around Spencer and sometimes Pete will be so loud that Spencer has no choice but to wrap around Pete and give him steady drums, steady beats to lull him into sleep. Safe safe hush little baby always my baby.
Brendon sometimes sends him a ?, shorthand for want to talk? and Spencer always smiles and sends back nofinedon'tworry
Ryan is harder to placate, has known Spencer since before Spencer knew that most people didn't have best friends that were loud and incessant in their heads pay attention, Spence. Since before Spencer learned how to put up curtains so he could focus in school when Ryan was bored. Ryan crawls into Spencer's brain and pokes around, so Spencer builds a wall around Pete and Ryan frowns at it. Sends always shared everything. Spencer hesitates after that, but this isn't really his to share. Sends back still share everything that's mine.
That makes Ryan back off, and Spencer breathes easier. Sends Ryan love love always love.
Pete always goes quiet for a while after Spencer sends something like that, won't answer when Spencer knocks on the door, and Spencer always sends sorry sorry. Sometimes he gets sulking again from Patrick, sometimes Pete opens the door and ties Spencer up in minenot hisnever letting go. It makes Spencer laugh, like rippling water, and then Pete loosens a little. He never lets go completely, though.
Spencer doesn't mind, would hate it if he did.
