KiScon Update #2
Hello K/S fans!
Spring seems to be springing, slowly but surely, up here in the northern hemisphere, and there’s now just six short months to go to KiScon 2017. It seems to be coming up fast! We’re getting very excited - OK, let’s face it, we’ve been excited since we started planning the con!
KiScon 2017 is timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the airing of Amok Time and we shall be celebrating that slashiest of episodes in different ways throughout the weekend.
We have an update for you today that contains some useful information for making your travel plans as well as getting involved in the convention!
Membership
Our membership continues to rise and we’re thrilled to have attendees coming from three continents. Will you be joining us? A full membership costs $140 until 14 July 2017, rising to $150 from July 15 2017. You can sign up now at http://kiscon.org/reg.php. A full membership gives you the following:
- Membership pack, which includes the con zine, with brand new K/S stories and art by some of the best in the fandom!
- Access to all the panels and talks and to the Hospitality room where beverages and snacks will be available
- The chance to see a wonderful Art Show and participate in our Art Auction, with your chance to bid for beautiful artwork
- On Friday, being the 50th anniversary of Amok Time, we will be showing this iconic episode as part of our Opening Ceremony.
- Saturday is fun-packed, with the Babel Banquet, the Costume Competition, our special KiScon Vid Competition - Amok Time Reloaded, plus a wonderful vid show featuring a number of New Vids made especially for the con
- Sharing the weekend with lots of other enthusiastic K/S fans with the chance to make new friends!
For those who aren’t able to attend, we ask you to consider a supporting membership for $40. It’s a great way to support KiScon, and if you decide later you do want to attend, it will go towards the cost of your full membership at the rate when you pay it in full. Supporting members will get a KiScon membership bag, with assorted goodies, plus a copy of the con zine on DVD. If you want us to send you these items, then you need to fill out the membership form on the website so we have details of where to send it to.
Convention schedule and visit to Leonard Nimoy's grave
To help you making your travel arrangements, we have put together the outline of the convention schedule:
For those who are interested in visiting Leonard Nimoy's grave, we plan to depart the hotel at 3.30pm on Thursday September 14th (the day before the convention starts). If you are not able to arrive in time, it is approximately 10 minutes from the hotel by car and Uber and Lyft both operate in the area.
We will also have an informal dinner on Thursday evening around 7pm. Details will follow closer to the time.
The convention will start at 10am on Friday September 14th with a welcome panel, but as usual we will have the opening ceremony on Friday evening so that those in the local area can attend if they are unable to take Friday off work.
The closing ceremony should be finished by 4pm on Sunday September 17th, but for those who are able to stay late the Dead Le Matya party will continue until the last of us can no longer stay awake.
Vid Shows
KiScon always puts on a great video show and this year will be no exception! T'Lara is organising the shows - all three of them! We’ll have Classics, our famous Disco Show on Saturday night, and - to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Amok Time - our special KiScon Vid Competition - Amok Time Reloaded. The vid shows are always hugely popular and entertaining, and to help make them special, we’re looking for new submissions. Art Show and Auction
Our art show is always hugely popular as the fandom has some incredibly talented artists. We’re looking for your submissions for display or to sell through our auction. If you’re interested, please take a look at our guidelines on the Art Show page of our website here: http://kiscon2017.org/art.php
Con Hotel
The con hotel is the Holiday Inn right next to Los Angeles Airport, which means if you’re flying in, you can hop off the plane and get to the hotel quickly - in just five minutes - using the hotel’s complimentary airport shuttle bus. Rhaegal has negotiated a special con rate which allows up to four to sleep to a room for $139 per night. The rate is valid for three days either side of the con, so you can extend your visit to take in some of the great things Los Angeles has to offer. You have to use the link to get that special rate from our website here: http://kiscon.org/venue.php Please use this link for booking rooms, as rooms booked through other sites won't count towards our room block!
If you want to come but want to keep costs down by sharing a room, we have a room-share request/offer page which you can sign up to once you become a member.
The hotel has a restaurant - The Landings Grill and Lounge open 6am to 11pm. It serves ‘California Cuisine’ - breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. Right next to the hotel is a McDonald’s.
Parking is onsite, at a rate to con-goers of $8 a day. We’ve been advised there is some free parking offsite, just behind the hotel, with parking at the owner’s risk.
