KiScon 2013: Weekly Update #5

Sep 09, 2013 19:47

As you know, thanks to a flurry of registrations and my downward revision of the number of people needed for me to proceed, KiScon is happening! So now, on with facts, figures, dates, news, links and pleas:

Dates and figures
Hotel: The con rate of $139/night per room is available only until September 30th, so please BOOK NOW. It won't cost you anything, yet. If we sell out of our room block early, there's a better chance that they might add some more room nights at the con rate or something close to it. The rate applies to 10/29-11/05, inclusive. (Dates in American format, so month first.)

Zine: The deadline for submissions of Art and Words is October 1st. That's coming up soon, so please email arminaart@gmail.com with your submissions and/or questions.

Memberships: Although the con is on, we still need more people to join us, so please talk about this event everywhere you possibly can! There's lot's more space, and it would be so fabulous to have a really huge party in the first state in the US to allow our space husbands to become, well, husbands! Register here: www.kiscon.org/con_reg.php

Supporting Memberships: If you or someone you know can't attend but would like to support KiScon, you can now register for a Supporting Membership! In return for $49.95, you'll get the KiScon Swag Bag with its assorted goodies, along with the con zine and the vid show and our undying gratitude. The money will go to covering the convention's expenses, contributing to the con charity and (hopefully) creating a little seed money for the next KiScon. Fun stuff
Panels: Got an idea for a discussion you want to see? A presentation you want to make? A panel you want to run? Start thinking about that, because I'm sending out an email to all the members on Thursday!

Vid Show: We have a reluctant pair of volunteers to wrangle this, and a number of people who want to submit vids. However, your reluctant volunteers would be HUGELY HAPPY if someone else with the necessary tech foo would leap into the fray and claim the Vid Show duties. Anyone? Bueller??

Babel Banquet: This is where you get to dress up as a visiting dignitary from another planet! Always wanted to explore your blue side? Got an urge to get your green on? Want to come as one of your favorite characters from Star Trek TOS or Reboot? How about one of those wonderful characters created by your favorite K/S fan-fiction author? This is your chance to do exactly that! You can make that dramatic entrance, claim your photo-op or just quietly take everyone's breath away. As long as it's legal and won't land anyone in the hospital, you can pull out all the stops. And don't worry if you have to stick with Terran outfits: On Babel, Earth is just another planet, and you can be visiting from its 21st century!

Boston!
There is so much to do in Boston, it would break LJ, Tumblr and Yahoo to mention it all! So here are a few bits of random info:

MOBA - The Museum of Bad Art - originated as a small collection in a private home in Boston. http://www.museumofbadart.org/

Faneuil Hall is famed for its food, shopping and history. It's on the MBTA Blue Line, which means it's really easy to get there from the hotel. http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/

The New England Aquarium is even closer to the hotel on the Blue Line than Faneuil Hall (just two stops from the hotel's 'Airport' stop), and it's a really great place. http://www.neaq.org/index.php

The USS Constitution and Charlestown Navy Yard: If we can't board a starship, we can (maybe) board the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. Admission is free, but if you're thinking of doing this, it's best to slog through the website and plan. The hours are limited in winter, so best to plan for Thursday or maybe Friday morning. http://www.cityofboston.gov/freedomtrail/ussconstitution.asp

There will be new Boston links added with each update from now on.

Finally, please check out the Room Sharing post frequently! There are several new folk seeking rooms: http://kiscon.livejournal.com/25685.html
