Byakuya gazed at the picture of Hisana, like he had so many times before.
He had stood here, thinking about times long gone and forgotten, and remembered the Sakura petals she had loved, remembered her gentle smiles and caresses.
She had been a fleeting presence in his life, gone before he had fully comprehended her. When she had gone, it had left a gaping hollowness in him that could never be filled, a coldness so deep it chilled him to the bone.
“Nii-sama?”
Perhaps the pain would never be gone, but he had someone else he wanted to protect now.
